About Dorothy Ley Hospice:

Dorothy Ley Hospice is a 4-star charity with an average results reporting grade and overhead spending inside of Ci's reasonable range. The charity is financially transparent and has funding reserves that can cover one year and five months of annual program costs. 

Founded in 1990, Dorothy Ley Hospice (DLH) is a volunteer-based charity that provides end-of-life care to people with life-limiting illnesses. DLH is located in Etobicoke and mainly serves clients from the Greater Toronto Area. Its main charitable programs are Residential Care, Community Support, and Education. In F2024, the charity spent $2.8m on programs. The charity reports that during the year, 2,804 were affected by its services. 

In F2024, Dorothy Ley Hospice spent $1.8m (62% of program spending) on Residential Care. The charity operates a 24-hour residential facility where patients receive medical care in a home-like environment. The facility has 12 beds, an activity room, dining room, and a room for reflection and spirituality. DLH offers residential hospice care to people who are over 18 years old and are expected to live less than three months. Patients must score 40 or lower on the Palliative Performance Scale to be eligible for hospice care. In F2024, the charity provided 182 people with end-of-life care in residence. 

DLH spent $895k (31% of program costs) on Community Support programs. DLH provides a variety of support services to clients including counselling, end-of-life planning, and emotional support for both patients and caregivers. The charity supported 1,164 people in their homes. DLH reports that it provided 96 day-program sessions.  

The remaining $162k (6% of program spending) were allocated to Education . DLH runs outreach events to inform the public about the benefits of palliative care and other topics related to hospice care. In F2024, the charity held 3,010 individual and group education sessions on grief and loss. The charity also reports that it attended 20 community fairs and education sessions to spread awareness on palliative care, reaching around 700 people. 

In F2024 DLH completed a revitalization project on its residence. In F2024 the capital expenditures were $1.0m. The charity upgraded two temporary hospice rooms and now provides 12 fully functioning hospice rooms. DLH also added a new air conditioning system, an infection control isolation room, a family suite, and a family shower room.

Results and Impact

Dorothy Ley Hospice surveys its clients to measure its program results. In F2024, DLH states that 96% of surveyed caregivers reported that their loved one's unique wishes and preferences were honoured by DLH. 100% reported that they felt valued coming to DLH’s day program. 87% said that they are better able to cope with grief. 

While Ci highlights these key results, they may not be a complete representation of Dorothy Ley Hospice’s results and impact. This charity is not rated on impact (n/r).

In F2024, Dorothy Ley Hospice received $2.7m in donations (up 20% from F2022). It also received $2.9m in government funding (51% of total revenue). Administrative costs are 19% of total revenue (excluding investment income) and fundraising costs are 14% of donations. This results in total overhead spending of 33%.
