OVERVIEW
About Rethink Breast Cancer:
Founded in 2001, Rethink Breast Cancer (RBC) works to empower young people worldwide who are concerned about and affected by breast cancer. Rethink Breast Cancer aims to shift away from veiwing breast cancer as an “old lady disease”. RBC reports that about 1 in 9 women can expect to develop breast cancer over the course of their lifetime. RBC primarily engages in support, education, and advocacy programs. The charity does not provide a breakdown of its spending on its programs.
In F2020, the charity hosted two Stretch Heal Grow retreats for 60 women diagnosed with breast cancer. The yoga and wellness retreats took place in BC and Ontario and included meditation, outdoor activities, and educational workshops.
Rethink Breast Cancer highlights its Give-A-Care program where care packages are provided to recipients and available for purchase. In F2020, RBC reports that during its Pay-It-Forward campaign it raised enough money to send 661 packages to women in need.
Rethink Breast Cancer works to provide digital resources to help women affected by breast cancer better navigate their experience with cancer, as well as providing stories of inspiration and support. In F2020, RBC reports writing 200 blogs posts and reaching over 20k followers on Instagram.
In F2020, the charity also granted $16k to research.

Results and Impact
Rethink Breast Cancer reports 10,000 people signed a petition for improved transparency and accountable timelines for metastatic breast cancer drugs. The charity reports its advocacy efforts were a success after pan-Canadian Pharmaceutical Alliance (pCPA) signed a letter of intent for shorter timelines to negotiate drug prices. As a result, price negotiations of Kisqali, a new breast cancer drug, were completed in half of the time of previous drugs.
While Ci highlights these key results, they may not be a complete representation of Rethink Breast Cancer’s results and impact. This charity is not yet rated on impact (n/r).

Finances
Rethink Breast Cancer has donations and special event revenues of $1.6m in F2020. Administrative costs are 9% of revenues (less investment income) and fundraising costs are 31% of donations and special events. This results in total overhead spending of 40%. For every dollar donated, 60 cents go to the cause. This is outside of Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending. Rethink Breast Cancer has been outside of this range since its first analysis in F2015.
RCB has $207k in funding reserves. The charity could cover 23% or almost three months of annual program costs with current reserves.
