About Nankind:

Founded in 2011, Nankind, formerly known as Nanny Angel Network (NAN) provides free, professional relief childcare primarily for mothers with cancer in the Greater Toronto (GTA) and Kingston areas. Nanny Angels care for children aged 16 and under, and offer support to families throughout treatment, recovery, palliative care, and bereavement. NAN notes that a cancer journey is a minimum of one year from diagnosis through recovery, and that children who are exposed to the long-term illness or death of a parent have a 50% increase in stress-related disorders, such as anxiety. Additionally, without reliable, affordable childcare, many sick parents postpone appointments, thus compromising their treatment. To mitigate these difficulties inherent to a cancer diagnosis, Nanny Angel Network strives to create a sense of security and emotional stability for the families it serves. As of F2020, NAN has over 150 nanny volunteers available to help families.

Nanny Angels volunteer their time for four hours a week so mothers can rest, go to appointments, or simply have a few hours for themselves. When a Nanny Angel visits, children get the warm, undivided attention of a trained caregiver who engages them and gives them a safe place to share their feelings. In F2020, Nanny Angel Network reports serving a total of 130 families in 30 cities across the GTA and Kingston areas. Of these families, NAN reports that 200 children were engaged, and 11 families were provided bereavement support. The charity facilitated a total of 2,748 hours of Nanny Angel visits in F2020.

As an essential service, Nankind adapted to the covid-19 pandemic by providing over 10,000 nutritious meals to immunocompromised or high-risk families, in F2020. NAN also launched four new virtual programs including Camp-in-a-Box, which provides children with items such as slime or crafts to keep them entertained, and a weekly virtual cancer support group for moms. Through these new programs, the charity provided 60 hours of cancer support for moms, 342 hours of virtual homework support, and delivered 514 camp boxes to children with sick parents.

Results and Impact

In 2016, Nankind's programs were evaluated by Dr. Ellen Warner, from the Sunnybrook Research Institute, and Leedan Cohen, an undergraduate student at the University of Toronto. This third-party evaluation showed that the service NAN provides benefits the entire family. Of the 104 NAN clients that completed an online survey, 87% of mothers indicated that their Nanny Angel encouraged them to adhere to medical appointments and treatment schedules, and 100% of families indicated that they would ask for NAN's help again.

Charity Intelligence highlights these key results. They may not be a complete representation of Nanny Angel Network's results. Charity Intelligence has not yet assessed impact on NAN. This shows as n/r, meaning not rated.

Nankind had total donations and special events revenues of $1.1m in F2020. Administrative costs are 8% of revenues (excluding investment income) and fundraising costs are 2% of donations. For every dollar donated to the charity, 90 cents go to the cause. This is within Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending. Charity Intelligence has included event and marketing expenses in fundraising costs; however, it does not appear that any salaries have been attributed to fundraising, so the fundraising cost ratio may be understated.

Funding reserves of $2.0m can cover 2.6 years of annual program costs.

In F2020, Nanny Angel Network paid $7k ($26k in F2019) in cleaning and admin fees to a related for-profit entity whose president is a Director of NAN, and $37k ($58k in F2019) in rent to a company whose president is the spouse of NAN's Board Chair; see Related Party Transactions in the audited financial statements. According to sources, NAN's founder and CEO, Audrey Guth, is no longer affiliated with related party Diamond Personnel - a for-profit professional nanny service.
