OVERVIEW
About BGC Canada:
Boys and Girls Club of Canada is a 4-star rated charity. It has a strong results reporting grade and its overhead costs are within Ci’s reasonable range. Although the operating charity is financially transparent, the charity’s Foundation’s financial disclosure does not follow best practices. The charity has $19.2m in reserve funds, which can cover ten months of annual program costs.
Founded in 1929, Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada (BGC Canada) is the umbrella charity that supports 635 local Boys and Girls Clubs across Canada, with locations in all provinces and territories except Northwest Territories and Nunavut. BGC Canada supports its member organizations to provide safe, supportive places where children and youth can experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships, and develop confidence. The charity reports that around 700,000 youth in Canada live in poverty with higher rates amongst minorities. As of March 2021, the charity operates under the name BGC Canada to align with inclusive practices in Canada.
In F2022, BGC Canada granted $12.8 million for specific programs, spent $5.3 million on national programs, $3.7 million on Club support, and $102 thousand on scholarships. In total, BGC Canada supported 142,035 people of which 22% were less than five years old, 45% were six to 12 years old, 21% were 13 to 21, 3% were 22 to 28 and 9% were over 29. Local Boys and Girls Clubs run educational, recreational, and skills development programs to help youth develop the skills they need to succeed in life. Local Club programs are categorized into six pillars: healthy active living, learning and career development, leadership, parenting, scholarships (for youth pursuing post-secondary education), and youth engagement. The charity reports that it provided 5,739,720 healthy meals and snacks and hosted over 60,000 hours of virtual programming across all its Clubs.
To support Clubs’ staff and reinforce policy standards, BGC Canada conducted 24 program specific training events and info sessions in F2022. It also hosted nine Trauma Informed Sessions for staff, which focused on challenging behaviours and staff burnout. The charity helped Clubs secure over 1,100 Canada Summer Job grants to hire youth across the country, totalling $5.4 million in funding.
In recognition of the need for equitable spaces for Indigenous Peoples, BGC Canada launched the Indigenous Youth of the year award in F2022.

Of these, 92% state that they are more accepting of others thanks to their Club. 90% say their Club has made them a more positive influence on others. 91% state they are more physically active, 90% report they made better choices, 91% say they are more confident in their abilities and 93% state they take more initiative.
In addition, BGC Canada’s National Team Survey revealed that 95% of Clubs that completed the survey are satisfied with BGC Canada’s work.
While Charity Intelligence highlights these key results, they may not be a complete representation of Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada’s results and impact.
This charity is not yet rated on impact (n/r).

Finances
The operating charity, BGC Canada, is financially transparent. Its two most recent audited financial statements are publicly available on its website. The charity’s Foundation only posts its most recent audited financial statements, which is not best practices for financial transparency.
Ci consolidated BGC Canada's finances with its associated Foundation's and excluded donations from the Foundation to the operating charity from revenues and expenses.
In F2022, BGC Canada had total donations and special events revenue of $9.8m. The charity also received $13.1m in government funding, representing 57% of total revenues. Administrative costs are 4% of revenues (excluding investment income) and fundraising costs are 23% of donations. This results in total overhead spending of 27%. For every dollar donated, 72 cents go to the charity’s programs and grants. This is within Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending.
BGC Canada has $19.2m in reserve funds, which could cover 93% or 11 months of annual program costs.
This charity report is an update that has been sent to Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada for review. Changes and edits may be forthcoming.

Note: Ci consolidated Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada with its associated Foundation and excluded transfers between the two charities from its analysis, reducing revenues and expenses by ($345k) in F2022, ($296k) in F2021 and ($296k) in F2020. Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada does not clearly report its fundraising costs on its audited financial statements. In addition, it is unclear if some line items are a combination of program, administrative and fundraising costs. Therefore, Ci reported program, administrative and fundraising costs from the charity's T3010 filing with the CRA. Ci adjusted for deferred contributions and included this adjustment in other income, as it is unclear from the audited financial statements whether these are government or non-government donations. This affected revenues by ($1.0m) in F2022, $1.5m in F2021 and $1.5m in F2020. Ci included the Foundation’s unrealized gains (losses) on investment in investment income, affecting revenue by ($453k) in F2022, $410k in F2021 and ($141k) in F2020. In F2021, Ci did not include a one-time grant reimbursement from the operating charity to the Foundation in expenses, affecting expenses by ($774k). Ci backed out amortization pro-rata from program, administrative and fundraising costs.
