About Fear Is Not Love Society:

Fear Is Not Love Society, formerly known as Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter, is a 5-star charity. It is financially transparent and has reasonable overhead costs and an above-average results reporting grade. Charity Intelligence has not yet accessed its demonstrated impact per dollar spent.

Founded in 1974, Fear Is Not Love Society (FearIsNotLove), formerly known as Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter, works to end family violence and abuse. It states that half of all women will experience physical or sexual violence, and in Canada, a woman is killed by her intimate partner every six days. Fear Is Not Love Society offers programs to help women and their families prevent, escape, or recover from abuse.

The charity’s three largest programs are Emergency Shelter, Community Services Counselling and Outreach, and Healthy Relationships.

Emergency Shelter - 52% of program costs ($5.1m): FearIsNotLove offers a 50-bed facility to house women and children escaping abuse. Shelter clients receive food, clothing, counseling, and support with long-term housing searches. The shelter housed 200 women and 286 children in F2023, compared to 307 women and 417 children in F2022.

Community Services Counselling and Outreach - 23% of program costs ($2.3m): This program helps women who are unable to or choose not to enter the Emergency Shelter. In F2023, 772 adults accessed these services.

Healthy Relationships - 12% of program costs ($1.2m): This is a prevention-based program for young clients to discuss issues relating to family violence, unhealthy relationships, and abusive behaviour. The program relies on referrals by teachers and school guidance counselors. In F2023, 253 youths participated in the program, compared to 233 youths in F2022.

The remaining 13% of program spending went to other programs, including Men's Counselling; Child, Youth, and Family Support; and Take A Stand. Men's Counselling helps men who are concerned that their anger and abusive behaviors are negatively impacting their family members. In F2023, this service helped 415 adults and 109 partners. Child, Youth, and Family Support provides counseling to children, youth and their family members who have experienced family violence and abuse. 65 children and 70 parents participated in the program in F2023.

Administrative costs are 10% of revenues (less investment income), and fundraising costs are 8% of donations. This results in total overhead spending of 17%.
