About Fear Is Not Love Society:
Fear Is Not Love Society, formerly known as Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter, is a 5-star, financially transparent charity. Its results reporting score is A, which is above average. Its overhead spending is within Ci’s reasonable range.
Founded in 1974, Fear Is Not Love Society (FearIsNotLove), formerly known as Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter, works to end intimate partner violence and abuse. Its programs help women, men, and children in preventing, escaping, or recovering from abuse.
FearIsNotLove reports that in 2022, there were 4,723 reported incidents of domestic-related violent crime, according to Calgary Police Service. Women and girls constituted two-thirds (69%) of the family violence victims. In Canada, a woman is killed by her intimate partner every six days.
The charity runs nine main programs.
The emergency shelter was 44% of program spending in F2024. In F2024, FearIsNotLive received 16,930 calls to its domestic violence helpline. It housed 225 women and 316 children in its 50-bed facility. According to the charity, 66% of its clients were at extreme risk of homicide.
Community services, counselling, & outreach was 18% of program spending in F2024. Counselling offers support, safety planning, and referrals to resources. It is conducted either in-person or virtually. In F2024, 737 adults accessed community services.
The Healthy Relationships program was 10% of program spending in F2024. Through FearIsNotLove, youth aged 12 and older have access to preventative domestic violence counselling and information. It operates both in-person at local schools and virtually. In F2024, the program had 449 youth participants.
Men's counselling was 10% of program spending in F2024. It offers counselling to address controlling or abusive behaviors. In F2024, this program helped 350 adults.
Child, youth, & family support was 6% of program spending in F2024. It offers individual, group, and family counselling. In F2024, it reported 42 children and 49 parents participating.
Men's digital strategy was 5% of program spending in F2024. It runs Men&, a digital resource kit of information and resources for mental and relational health challenges men face. In F2024, FearIsNotLove reported 288 participants in Men&.
The Take A Stand program was 3% of program spending in F2024. It runs presentations for workplaces and organizations to raise awareness about domestic violence. In F2024, the program had 36 participants.
Indigenous strategy was 2% of program spending in F2024. FearIsNotLove partners with Tsuut’ina Stoney Corrections Society to address generational traumas through a 12-week workshop. In F2024, it benefitted five women and ten men.
The Court Program was 2% of program spending in F2024. The Court Program provides a case coordinator for legal assistance in domestic violence cases. In F2024, it benefitted 318 adults.

Results and Impact
Fear Is Not Love Society reports the following outcomes of its programs:
- 100% of women who accessed the Emergency Shelter indicated that they felt safe from their abuser while in shelter;
- 97% of clients served through Community Services Counselling indicated they learned how to keep themselves safe;
- 91% of youth indicated that they learned the skills to help build health relationships through programming;
- 77% of men served through Men’s Counselling Service reported that they could better handle conflict and stress;
- 94% of parents saw a positive change in their child after the Child, Youth and Family Therapy Program;
- 97% of Take A Stand participants felt more confident to respond to someone who discloses domestic violence; and
- 100% of Court Program clients indicated a better understanding of the court process.
While Ci highlights these key results, they may not be a complete representation of Fear Is Not Love’s results and impact.

In F2024, FearIsNotLove received $7.3m in donations and special events revenue. It also received 37% ($4.4m) of total revenue in government funding. Administrative costs were 10% of revenues, less investment income. Fundraising costs were 8% of donations. Total overhead spending was 18%.
