OVERVIEW

About Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation:

Founded in 1984, Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation (RAHF) works to improve the health of people in Alberta by raising money for Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH) and its three centres of excellence: Lois Hole Hospital for Women, CK Hui Heart Centre, and the Eye Institute of Alberta. RAH sees more than 500,000 patients each year. The Foundation supports education, research, equipment purchases, and capital projects in many of the hospital’s departments. RAHF granted a total of $8.8m to healthcare programs in F2021 and $8.0m in F2020. At the time of this report, the Foundation has not posted its F2021 annual report. The following information is reported from the Foundation's F2020 publications. In Newsweek's 2020 ranking of Canadian hospitals, Royal Alex Hospital ranked 26th.

In F2020, RAHF allocated 29% of total grants to programs and priorities at RAH. The hospital had 78,248 emergency visits and completed 37,519 surgeries in F2020. Additionally, CK Hui Heart Centre at RAH treated 1,999 inpatients, 17,127 outpatients, and 924 cardiac ICU patients. The Eye Institute of Alberta had a total of 43,294 patient visits in F2020.

In F2020, RAHF distributed 29% of grants to Lois Hole Hospital for Women and Women & Children’s Health Research Institute. According to RAHF, women’s health research represents less than eight percent of national funding, despite women accounting for nearly half of Alberta’s population. Because the majority of research findings are from studies that only included men, differences between men’s and women’s bodies are often ignored, which can have dramatic effects on women’s health. For example, RAHF reports that heart attack symptoms in women go unrecognized 53% of the time. Lois Hole is the only dedicated women’s hospital in Alberta. In F2020, there were 7,766 babies born and 67,727 total outpatient visits at Lois Hole.

RAHF allocated 26% of grants to research and education in F2020. Main research projects in F2020 included the finding that women have a higher percentage of immature red blood cells, which could affect their response to vaccines; the discovery of a gene that may contribute to urinary tract infections; and the determination that COVID-19 has increased depression and anxiety in pregnant and post-partum mothers.

RAHF allocated the remaining grants to equipment (10%) and patient experience (6%). In F2020, the Foundation funded the purchase of an intraoperative ultrasound attachment for the hospital’s da Vinci robot, which allows surgeons to perform robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgeries. This surgery helps surgeons locate cancerous masses in a patient’s body.

This report uses the most recent output data available.

Results and Impact

RAHF reports that the new intraoperative ultrasound attachment for the hospital’s da Vinci robot allows surgeons to perform minimally invasive and precise surgeries that can reduce recovery time. The Foundation estimates that the hospital will complete between 120 and 150 surgeries each year with the equipment.

While Charity Intelligence highlights these key results, they may not be a complete representation of Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation’s results and impact. This charity is not yet rated on impact (n/r).

Finances

In F2021, Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation had total donations of $5.4m. The Foundation received an additional $5.4m in net lottery income, representing 25% of total revenues. Administrative costs are 20% of revenues and fundraising costs are 43% of donations. This results in total overhead spending of 63%. For every dollar donated, 37 cents go to the cause, which falls outside Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending.

RAHF has $54.3m in funding reserves, of which $24.2m is donor endowed. Excluding donor-endowed funds, the Foundation could grant at the F2020 level for just under four years.

Charity Intelligence sent an update of this report to Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation for review. Changes and edits may be forthcoming.
