OVERVIEW

About McGill University Health Centre Foundation:

McGill University Health Centre Foundation is a 2-star charity. It is financially transparent and has reasonable overhead costs. However, it has a below-average results reporting grade. Before you give, read Charity Intelligence's report.

Founded in 1998, McGill University Health Centre Foundation (MUHC Foundation) raises funds for research, patient care, hospital redevelopment, and equipment at McGill University Health Centre. In 2018, MUHC Foundation and Royal Victoria Hospital Foundation merged to form McGill University Health Centre Foundation as it is known today. In 2021, MUHC Foundation merged with the Montreal Chest Institute Foundation. In 2022, MUHC Foundation joined with the Lachine Hospital Foundation to raise funds for Lachine Hospital's redevelopment. Lachine Hospital is part of McGill University Health Centre.

In F2022, MUHC Foundation provided a total of $22.5m in grants. These grants support research, patient care, hospital redevelopment, and new equipment purchases at MUHC.

MUHC Foundation helped to establish the McGill Interdisciplinary Initiative in Infection and Immunity (MI4) in April 2018 to conduct groundbreaking research on infections. Research at MI4 focuses on four main themes: antimicrobial resistance, emerging and re-emerging diseases, infections in vulnerable populations, and diseases of altered immunity. In F2019, MUHC Foundation granted $150k each to 12 MI4 projects. In total, MI4 brings together more than 250 researchers. With the support of the covid-19 research fund, MI4 launched over 50 projects.

MUHC is also doing research on the DOvEEgene test. The test promises to be the world’s first reliable way to diagnose ovarian and endometrial cancers early. As of 2021 1,050 women ages 45 to 70 were enrolled in the clinical trial. The trial will last three years and is the final trial before the test is submitted to Health Canada for approval.

The DialyTran Wellness program funded by MUHC Foundation provides support to MUHC patients living with end-stage kidney disease. The program serves 260 patients and 100 caregivers.

In 2021, MUHC Foundation funded the purchase of Wi-Fi and television services for each of the 341 patient rooms at Royal Victoria Hospital.

Results and Impact

MUHC Foundation funds research on improving kidney transplant outcomes. Research from MUHC found that kidneys from older donors that have excellent initial function or that return to good function within 90 days after transplantation are capable of keeping patients alive and well without need for dialysis for 10 years or more.

MUHC's Prehabilitation program helps patients get healthier before they undergo surgery. By doing this, doctors aim to help improve recovery times and patient outcomes. One patient who could not walk before the Prehabilitation program was able to walk without assistance after 12 weeks.

MUHC Foundation also funds critical research on topics ranging from diabetes to HIV testing. Research by Dr. Kaberi Dasgupta found that regular walking can lead to a 40% reduction in mortality rates for adults with type 2 diabetes. Dr. Dasgupta’s research into the efficacy of treatment methods also showed that a physician-prescribed step count and pedometer could lead to a 20% increase in daily steps among patients, contributing to lower blood sugar and insulin resistance. Dr. Nitika Pant Pai, another MUHC researcher, helped develop a new app that could detect the presence of HIV antibodies within only 20 minutes.

While Ci highlights these key results, they may not be a complete representation of McGill University Health Centre Foundation’s results and impact.

Finances

McGill University Health Centre Foundation received $26.8m in donations and special events revenue in F2022, making it one of Canada's 100 largest charities by donations. Administrative and fundraising costs are 20% of revenues (less investment income). For every dollar donated to the charity, 80 cents go to the cause. This is within Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending.

MUHC Foundation has $137.4m in liquid assets and ($31.3m) in mortgages on land and buildings. This means that its net funding reserves are $106.1m, of which $71.8m is donor-endowed. Excluding donor-endowed funds, the charity can cover 1 year and 10 months of grant expenses at the F2022 level with its net funding reserves.

This charity report is an update that has been sent to McGill University Health Centre Foundation for review. Changes and edits may be forthcoming.
