About Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation :

The Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation (MSHF) is the fundraising arm of the Markham Stouffville Hospital, which serves a community of over 330,000 people in the Greater Toronto Area. The MSHF's mission is to create, organize and effectively manage a comprehensive fundraising program for the hospital.

In 2008, MSHF launched a $50m Expansion Campaign to help the hospital meet the needs of its growing community. The campaign was successfully completed in 2014 and raised $56m. Between F2010 and F2014 MSHF doubled the size of the facility, tripled the size of the emergency department, and increased access to surgical services, maternal health services, and oncology services, among others. The key features of the expansion include, an expanded emergency department, an improved and expanded ambulatory clinic, over 100 new inpatient beds, 8 new operating rooms, an expanded diagnostic imaging center, an enhanced maternal child program and an expanded mental health services program.

Financial Review:

Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation is a big-cap charity with $7.8m in F2016 donations and special events revenues. Its administrative and fundraising costs are 39% of revenues. For every dollar donated, 61 cents go towards the foundation’s grants to the hospital, falling outside of Ci’s reasonable range. MSHF has total funding reserves of $16.4m, resulting in a program cost coverage ratio of 1778%. This means that the foundation’s reserves can cover 17.8 years of its annual program costs at F2016 granting levels. However, this figure may be inflated as it is unclear if the decline in grants from $6.6m in F2015 to $922k in F2016 will be sustained going forward now that the hospital expansion is complete.

This charity report is an update that is being reviewed by Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation. Changes and edits may be forthcoming.
