OVERVIEW

About Amici Children's Camp Charity:

Amici Children's Camp Charity is a 2-star charity due to its low demonstrated impact. The charity is financially transparent and has a high results reporting grade but overhead costs outside of Ci's reasonable range. Before you give, read Charity Intelligence’s report.

Founded in 1966, Amici Children's Camp Charity (Amici) provides funding for kids from low-income families to go to summer camp. Amici sees camp as an opportunity for kids to make new friends, access role models, and develop leadership skills. Campers spend about 2 weeks at one of 45 partner camps, and over 70% of Amici campers return to camp each summer.

In F2022, Amici supported 251 campers at 45 partner camps for a total of 566.5 weeks. Of those 251 campers, 14 were leadership campers, and 27 stayed at the camp for longer than planned. Based on total costs, Amici spent an average of $5,252 per camper in F2022, down 34% from $7,939 in F2021 but up 22% from pre-pandemic levels.

Comments added by the Charity:

Amici Children's Camp Charity added the following comment to the 2023 profile:

In Fiscal Year 2022 and 2023, Amici Children's Camp Charity made two significant investments in the future of the organization that contributed to a lower cents to the cause, then what has been seen in previous years. The first investment was working with a consulting group to engage in an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy, leading to the development of Amici’s EDI Strategic Roadmap and Charter. Amici acknowledged that while our program participants come from diverse backgrounds, this diversity was not reflected in all of Amici’s operations. Further, Amici recognized that, in general, campers at Ontario summer camps do not, traditionally, reflect the diversity found in Ontario’s population and that Amici has a unique opportunity and role to work with our partner camps to create inclusive and safe spaces at camp for all campers.

The second investment was the undertaking of a new visual identity that better communicates the essence of what Amici is all about. To accomplish this we employed a creative design agency to develop our updated branding and a new communication strategy. Both projects came with one-time investments, split between fiscal year 2022 and 2023. Amici’s Board of Directors are confident that these strategic investments will have a positive impact first and foremost on the campers and families in Amici’s program, but also on the long-term fundraising capacity of our organization.

We know that the summer camp experience positively impacts Amici camper’s confidence, optimism, resilience and leadership skills. At the end of summer 2022, 97% of Amici parents and guardians reported that they noticed a positive change in their child since returning home from camp. We believe that life skills learned at camp extend beyond our campers to have a positive impact on their family and broader community.
