OVERVIEW

About Autism Canada:

Autism Society Canada is a three-star financially transparent charity. It has a C results reporting grade, which is below average. For every dollar donated, 54 cents are available to go to the cause. This is outside Charity Intelligence’s reasonable range.

Founded in 1976, Autism Society Canada (ASC) improves the lives of people living on the autism spectrum. It does this by subsidizing treatment costs not covered by provincial health plans, running social media advocacy campaigns, and running caregiver training programs. According to the charity, without appropriate intervention, the behaviours shown by people living with autism are difficult to change. ASC runs three programs: Community Assistance Program, Literacy Program, and Outreach & Engagement. It spent $367k in the fiscal year ending in December 2023. ASC’s 2023 annual report did not provide a program spending breakdown.

Community Assistance Program refers to financial support ASC provides to autistic individuals, families, and caregivers. According to the charity, many necessary treatments are not covered by provincial health plans, meaning families face financial barriers when treating an autistic loved one. In 2023, ASC directly assisted 2,102 individuals and provided 5,407 hours worth of assistance. The charity did not disclose the dollar value of aid provided in 2023.

Literacy Program trains first responders, caregivers, teachers, and others how to both recognize and manage behaviours shown by people on the autism spectrum. According to the charity, this helps those living with autism feel included in their communities. In 2023, the charity provided this training to 1,200 people.

Outreach & Engagement refers to ASC’s social media campaigns, advocacy conferences, and news media presence. The charity reportedly expanded its digital presence in 2023. It hosted 25 media interviews with CTV, Global News, CBC, and other organizations. ASC also reported a total of 63,600 social media followers but did not disclose if these are cumulative followers or unique follows gained in 2023.
