OVERVIEW

About Egale Canada:

Egale Canada is a two-star charity. It is not financially transparent, has a below-average results reporting grade, and has reasonable overhead spending.

Egale Canada (Egale) aims to improve the lives of 2SLGBTQI people in Canada and enhance the global response to 2SLGBTQI issues. The charity states that in the first three months of 2023, there were 6,423 anti-2SLGBTQI protests and instances of online hate in Canada. Egale envisions a world free of homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, and all other forms of oppression. The charity addresses these issues through four main programs: research, education, advocacy, and legal advocacy. Egale does not provide a breakdown of spending on its programs.

Egale conducts diverse, community-based research on issues faced by 2SLGBTQI people. Its research focuses on school inclusion and inclusive education, employment and workplace inclusion, gender-based violence, aging issues, health and wellbeing, health access and equity, and intersex rights and issues.

Egale provides educational resources on 2SLGBTQI inclusion, including workplace training and school initiatives. In F2021, Egale’s virtual Workplace Inclusion Training Program held 122 webinars for 4,326 participants. The charity also released a six-episode series on how legal professionals can promote access to justice for 2SLGBTQI people, which more than 1,400 people viewed.

Egale creates awareness campaigns to bring attention to 2SLGBTQI issues. In F2021, the charity ran a holiday campaign highlighting the effects of homophobia, transphobia, and biphobia during the holiday season. Egale also held a virtual Pride celebration and Queer Prom in F2021.

Egale states that its legal advocacy work ensures that its research, education, and awareness work is lasting. It aims to ensure 2SLGBTQI experiences are reflected in policy at all levels of government. In F2021, Egale filed an application at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice to challenge exemptions in the Criminal Code that allow ‘normalizing’ surgery on intersex infants and children.

Results and Impact

Egale Canada reports that it supported the Centre for Gender Advocacy in a case where the Quebec court ruled in favour of trans, nonbinary, and intersex rights.

In F2021, Egale published research findings on public services safety for 2SLGBTQI adults and workers; cyber violence that 2SLGBTQI youth in esports face; and homophobia, transphobia, and biphobia in Canadian schools.

While Ci highlights these results, they may not be a complete representation of Egale Canada’s results and impact.

This charity is not yet rated on impact (n/r).

Finances

Egale Canada is not financially transparent. It does not make its audited financial statements available on its website. Ci completed the following financial review using F2021 and F2020 financial statements provided by the CRA. The F2020 financial statements do not contain a statement of financial position.

Egale had total donations of $1.4m in F2021. The charity also received $1.8m in government funding, representing 52% of total revenues.

Administrative costs are 16% of revenues, and fundraising costs are 15% of donations. This results in total overhead spending of 31%. For every dollar donated, 69 cents go to the cause, which is within Ci’s reasonable range.

Egale has $1.9m in reserve funds (cash and investments), which could cover 68% or over eight months of its annual program costs.

In F2019, two of Egale's programs, Egale Youth Services and Egale Centre, became an independent organization called Friends of Ruby. Egale transferred $2.2m to Friends of Ruby in F2019. Egale’s Housing Advisory Board became the board of directors for Friends of Ruby.

This report has been sent to Egale Canada for review.
