OVERVIEW

About Egale Canada:

Egale Canada is a 3-star charity that is not financially transparent. Its results reporting score is average and its overhead spending is within Ci’s reasonable range. Its reserve funds can cover four months of annual program costs.

Founded in 1986, Egale Canada (Egale) works to improve the lives of 2SLGBTQI people in Canada. It envisions a world without homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, and all other forms of oppression so people can live free from hatred and bias. Statistics Canada reports that hate crimes against 2SLGBTQI people are on the rise across Canada, in addition to political attacks on 2SLGBTQI rights.

It runs four main programs: Research, Education, Awareness, and Legal Advocacy. Their work aims to create societies and systems that reflect the universal truth that all people are equal and none are other. It does not provide a program spending breakdown.

Research aims to better understand 2SLGBTQI experiences on various issues and produce evidence to inform policy changes. In F2023, Egale produced five research reports and two peer-reviewed journal articles. It also held nine conference presentations. These addressed issues like gaps in healthcare and gender-based violence. It also conducted a national survey of mental healthcare support in Canada for queer people, which involved 304 online survey participants and 61 focus group participants.

Education runs 2SLGBTQI inclusion training workshops, modules, and presentations for workplaces, schools, and healthcare institutions. It aims to create inclusive environments for 2SLGBTQI people. In F2023, Egale reported running 75 training sessions across 47 workplaces and 54 training sessions across 18 schools.

Awareness campaigns highlight the issues uncovered through their research and promote educational resources.  In F2023, Egale ran eight awareness campaigns and produced 49 resources in French and 71 in English. The media mentioned its work 182 times.

Legal Advocacy aims to defend and improve the rights of 2SLGBTQI people in Canada. In F2023, Egale wrote 12 letters, five intervention filings, and four government submissions. It was also involved in three legal case decisions. It launched a lawsuit against the Government of Saskatchewan for its school pronoun policy, which would require teachers to misgender or deadname children unless their parents consented to a name or pronoun change. Egale’s commissioned poll reports that 59% of respondents from Saskatchewan believe this policy will harm children.

Results and Impact

Egale Canada reports that of its workshop attendees, 100% agree that they feel better equipped to address 2SLGBTQI issues within their school communities. 82% of participants felt better equipped to share knowledge of 2SLGBTQI identities and experiences.

Egale’s Legal Advocacy program was involved in the Rainbow Alliance Dryden et al. v. Webster case, in which the Ontario Superior Court of Justice ruled that the term “groomer” was a slur against drag performers and 2SLGBTQI people.

While Ci highlights these key results, they may not be a complete representation of the charity’s results and impact. This charity is not yet rated on impact (n/r).

Finances

In F2023, Egale Canada received $1.5m in donations. It also received $4.2m in government funding, representing 69% of revenue. Administrative costs were 5% of revenues. Fundraising costs were 2% of donations. Total overhead spending was 6%. For every dollar donated, 94 cents are available to go to the cause. This is within Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending. As the charity’s T3010 filing for F2023 was not yet available at the time of this report, there may be minor inconsistencies in its administrative, fundraising, and program expense ratios.

The charity is not financially transparent. It provides its financial statements upon request but does not make them publicly available. In F2023, Egale had $2.0m in funding reserves (cash and investments). These reserves can cover four months of annual program costs.

This charity report is an update that has been sent to Egale Canada for review. Changes and edits may be forthcoming.
