About Muslim Welfare Canada:
Muslim Welfare Canada is a 2-star charity. It is not financially transparent and has a below average results reporting grade of C. Before you give, read Charity Intelligence’s report.
Founded in 1993, Muslim Welfare Canada (MWC) is a Scarborough, Ontario-based charity that works in both Canada and internationally to serve those in need. In Canada, it runs food banks, distributes halal meals, and operates shelters. Internationally, it supports schools in Pakistan, funds water pump installations, and provides relief during disasters.
In F2022, MWC spent $5.7m on Canadian programs and grants (93% of total program and grant spending).
In Canada, MWC runs a food program. During the year it had over 35,000 visits to its food banks in Scarborough and Mississauga. It runs two food banks in the Arctic, one in Inuvik and one in Iqaluit. These food banks had over 5,000 visits in F2022. Its Halal Meals on Wheels program for seniors delivered over 37,000 meals in F2022. MWC also built 6,000 Ramadan food baskets for families in need during the year. MWC also supports 28 schools through its public school nutrition program.
MWC also operates shelters. It runs a 26-room shelter for homeless women in Whitby, ON. It also has a 45-bed facility in the Durham region. Since 1996, MWC has provided emergency shelter to over 19,500 women and their families.
In F2022, MWC spent $604k on international programs (7% of total program spending).
As part of its Support a Child Program, MWC runs two schools in Karachi, Pakistan. These schools provide over 1,100 children with free primary and secondary education and educational materials. Under its Water Exploration program, MWC funds hand pumps and water wells. It has funded over 3,000 water wells and hand pumps that were installed in desert and remote areas of Pakistan.

Aside from the results reported above, during the covid-19 pandemic, MWC provided 1,100 meals to frontline workers.

Muslim Welfare Canada is not financially transparent. Its audited financial statements are not posted on its website nor provided when requested. Charity Intelligence's financial review uses the F2022 summary financial statements. This is the most recent information we have received from the Charities Directorate from our request for information.
In F2022, Muslim Welfare Canada received $6.0m in donations. It also received $233k in goods-in-kind donations. It received $2.5m in government funding, amounting to 28% of total revenues. Fundraising costs are 7% of donations and administrative costs are 5% of revenues (less investment income). Total overhead spending is 12%. For each dollar donated, 88 cents go to the cause. This is within Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending.
Reserve funds of $7.1m can cover program and grant costs for just over a year at the F2022 level.
