About Salal Sexual Violence Support Centre :

Salal Sexual Violence Support Centre is a three-star charity with an average results reporting grade. For every dollar donated to the charity, 75 cents are available to go to the cause. This is within Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending.

Founded in 1982, the Salal Sexual Violence Support Centre (formerly WAVAW Rape Crisis Centre) supports women, Two-Spirit, trans, and non-binary people affected by sexual violence. In early 2023, the charity changed its name to reflect its commitment to decolonization and alignment with survivors' values. Salal focuses on survivor-led support, employing survivors as staff and volunteers to strengthen its services. Its main programs are victim services, social change, and counselling.

The Counselling Program made up 40% of program costs in F2023. Counselling services include sexual assault counselling, inclusion counselling, Indigenous counselling, and counselling for families of MMIWG2S (Families of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and 2-Spirit People). In F2023, Salal recorded 277 support group sessions (vs. 101 in F2022) and 2,253 individuals sessions (vs. 1,304 in F2022). The charity reported 169 total intakes in F2023.

Victim Services made up 34% of program costs in F2023. Salal offers a 24-hour crisis and information line, hospital and police accompaniments, and support in court. In F2023, Salal Sexual Violence Support Centre received 1,410 daytime calls and reported 191 new intakes. It also reported 100 hospital accompaniments and 50 hours supporting police reports. Salal spent 103 hours supporting survivors in court. The new Sexual Assault Centre is opening in downtown Vancouver as a home for healing, providing a range of support services for survivors of sexualized violence.

The Social Change Program made up 26% of program costs in F2023. This program focuses on addressing systemic oppression and sexualized violence through educational outreach and advocacy for sex workers' rights. The Inclusion Project focuses on working with and healing transgender survivors. In F2023, Salal offered 39 workshops and tabled at ten community events, reaching around 2,000 people.
