About Salal Sexual Violence Support Centre :

Founded in 1982, the Salal Sexual Violence Support Centre (formerly WAVAW Rape Crisis Centre) supports women, Two-Spirit, trans, and non-binary people affected by sexual violence. In early 2023, the charity changed its name to reflect its commitment to decolonization and alignment with survivors' values. Salal focuses on survivor-led support, employing survivors as staff and volunteers to strengthen its services. Its main programs are victim services, social change, and counselling.
The Counselling Program made up 40% of program costs in F2023. Counselling services include sexual assault counselling, inclusion counselling, Indigenous counselling, and counselling for families of MMIWG2S (Families of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and 2-Spirit People). This program focuses on addressing systemic oppression and sexualized violence through educational outreach and advocacy for sex workers' rights. The Inclusion Project focuses on working with and healing transgender survivors. In F2023, Salal offered 39 workshops and tabled at ten community events, reaching around 2,000 people.
