Founded in 1971, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is one of the world's largest international aid charities. Its work focuses on providing medical care around the world, operating in 72 countries in 2025. MSF’s charter states that it provides aid based solely on need, irrespective of race, religion, gender, or political affiliation.

Doctors Without Borders Canada (MSF Canada) is the Canadian branch of MSF. In 2025, MSF Canada spent $96.8m on programs, including $80.4m on international programs and $16.4m spent in Canada providing support for the international programming.

In 2025, 61% of MSF’s international program spending was in Africa, 21% in Southwest Asia (the Middle East) & North Africa, 10% in Asia & Pacific, 5% in the Americas, and 3% in Europe & Central Asia. In 41% of cases, MSF intervened in areas of armed conflict. 28% of its interventions were in areas of internal instability. Only 31% of its interventions occurred in stable areas.

In 2025, MSF performed 17.1 million outpatient consultations, with 2.9 million emergency room admissions and 1.8 million patients admitted.

It administered 2.1 million vaccinations against measles in response to outbreaks, treated 3.6 million cases of malaria, 148,900 people for cholera, 82,800 people for sexual violence, 39,400 people for HIV, and 30,400 people for tuberculosis.

Furthermore, MSF distributed relief items to 653,300 families, admitted 615,200 malnourished children to outpatient feeding programmes, performed 548,400 individual mental health consultations, and assisted in 405,000 births.

The charity performed 146,500 surgeries involving the incision, excision, manipulation, or suturing of tissue, using anaesthesia. It also treated 2,280 victims of torture.

MSF Canada is a Major 100 charity, one of Canada’s largest charities in terms of donations, receiving $113.6m in donations in 2025 (85% of its total revenue). It also received $12.5m in government funding (9% of revenue).

In 2025, MSF Canada spent $96.8m on its programs, including $80.4m internationally and $16.4m in support in Canada, accounting for 72% of its revenue.

Fundraising costs were $16.0m, which was 14% of donations, and administrative costs were $3.3m, which was 3% of revenue (excluding investment income). Total overhead was 17%, meaning that for every dollar donated, 83 cents are available to go to the cause. This is within Ci’s reasonable range.

Doctors Without Borders Canada has reserve funds (cash and investments) of $34.0m. This is enough to cover program spending at 2025 levels for just over four months, which is within Ci’s reasonable range.

MSF Canada uses external fundraisers. In 2025, it paid external fundraisers $2.7m to raise $18.2m in revenue, at a cost of $0.15 per dollar raised.
