OVERVIEW

About Peterborough Regional Health Centre Foundation:

Founded in 1980, Peterborough Regional Health Centre Foundation (PRHC Foundation) raises funds for equipment, cancer care, and patient programs. It funds Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC), which cares for up to 600,000 people across Peterborough and the Kawarthas each year. The charity aims to improve patient care at PRHC by attracting top medical professionals, buying the latest equipment, and funding innovative programs.

In F2021, PRHC Foundation granted $7.0m to Peterborough Regional Health Centre. Its three largest grant areas included the Cardiac Catheterization Lab, Intensive Care Unit, and Emergency Department; Cancer Care; and Covid-19 Relief.

The Cardiac Catheterization Lab, Intensive Care Unit, and Emergency Department received 54% of grants in F2021. PRHC’s cardiac care program works to diagnose coronary artery disease and prevent heart attacks early. The charity reports that PRHC’s cardiac care team performs nearly 3,000 procedures each year. In F2021, PRHC Foundation helped to buy six new ECG machines to diagnose heart conditions. PRHC Foundation also states that PRHC has one of the busiest emergency departments in Ontario, with around 86,000 visits each year.

Cancer Care represented 38% of grants in F2021. PRHC’s cancer clinic receives around 22,000 annual visits, which has grown by 25% over the last five years. To keep up with rising patient volumes, PRHC Foundation is raising funds to buy two new CT scanners. It also plans to install a Robotic Intravenous Automation System (RIVA), an automated method of chemotherapy delivery.

Covid-19 Relief and Highest Priority Needs were 5% of grants. PRHC Foundation launched a new covid-19 relief fund in F2021 to support health care workers and patients. During the year, it helped to deliver 3,200 wellness kits to physicians, nurses, and hospital staff. Each kit included snacks and self-care products.

The remaining 3% of grants went to Labour, Delivery, and Neonatal ICU (2%) and Mental Health Services (1%). PRHC Foundation reports that the hospital receives more than 32,000 mental health outpatient visits each year.

Results and Impact

PRHC Foundation helps to fund PRHC’s growing interventional radiology program. Interventional radiology is a subspecialty of radiology that uses X-rays, CT scans, or ultrasounds to guide minimally invasive surgical procedures and reduce the need for conventional surgery. The charity reports that minimally invasive procedures help to reduce pain and shorten hospital stays for patients. PRHC provides around 6,000 of these procedures each year.

While Ci highlights these key results, they may not be a complete representation of Peterborough Regional Health Centre Foundation’s results and impact. This charity is not yet rated on impact (n/r).

Finances

Peterborough Regional Health Centre Foundation received donations of $6.6m in F2021. Combined administrative and fundraising costs are 23% of revenues (less investment income). For every dollar donated to the charity, 77 cents go to the cause. This is within Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending.

PRHC Foundation has $12.9m in funding reserves. This includes $5.4m in endowment funds, but the charity’s audited financial statements do not separate donor-endowed funds from internally-endowed funds. Total funding reserves can cover annual grant costs for around 1.9 years.

PRHC Foundation’s funding reserves contributed $1.2m in investment income in F2021, at an estimated rate of return of 10% ($81k at a rate of return of 1% in F2020). Over the last seven years, Ci estimates that the charity’s investment returns have averaged 3%.

Peterborough Regional Health Centre Foundation discloses related party transactions. In F2021, it paid $4.7m in grants and $2.3m in unpaid grant amounts from prior years to PRHC. It also reimbursed the hospital for $1.0m in overhead costs. PRHC provides rent-free office space to the charity each year, the value of which is not recorded.

Charity Intelligence has sent this update to Peterborough Regional Health Centre Foundation for review. Changes and edits may be forthcoming.
