OVERVIEW

About Focus Humanitarian Assistance:

Focus Humanitarian Assistance is a 0-star charity. It is not financially transparent, reports very little of its results for donors, and has Low demonstrated impact. Before you give, read Charity Intelligence's report.

Founded in 1994, Focus Humanitarian Assistance (FOCUS) is an international crisis response and disaster risk management agency. Its mission is to save lives, reduce suffering and create resilience in communities prone to man-made and natural disasters.

In F2020, 85% of FOCUS' program and grant spending was grants to partner charities ($6.2m). In F2020, it granted $2.0m to Aga Khan Foundation Geneva and $898k to Focus Humanitarian Assistance Europe Foundation.

Aside from granting to other charities, FOCUS runs two main programs. It spent 10% of total program and grant spending on Refugee and Internally Displaced Persons Assistance. It also spent 1% of total program and grant spending on Disaster Prevention, Mitigation, and Preparedness. The remaining 4% of program and grant spending was on Operational Strengthening.

Finances

FOCUS Humanitarian Assistance is not financially transparent. Its audited financial statements are not posted on its website nor provided when requested. Charity Intelligence's financial review uses the F2020 unaudited financial statements. This is the most recent information we have received from the Charities Directorate from our request for information.

In F2020, FOCUS received $5.1m in Canadian donations. It also received $2.4m in international donations. Fundraising costs are 6% of donations and administrative costs are 3% of total revenues (less investment income). Total overhead spending is 9%. For each dollar donated, 91 cents go to the cause. This is within Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending.

FOCUS has $3.8m in reserve funds that can cover program and grant costs at the F2020 level for six months.

In F2020 the charity established receivables of $1.8m from redacted affiliates that are non-interest bearing, have no set repayment terms and are unsecured.
