OVERVIEW

About Alzheimer Society of Toronto:

Alzheimer Society of Toronto is a 4-star charity. It is financially transparent and has an above-average results reporting grade and overhead spending within Ci’s reasonable range.

Founded in 1984, Alzheimer Society of Toronto (AST) is one of Alzheimer Society of Ontario’s member chapters. AST’s mission is to alleviate personal and social consequences of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias and to promote research. AST offers support, information and education to people with dementia as well as families and caregivers. The charity also aims to increase public awareness of dementia, promote research, and advocate for services that respect the dignity of people with dementia.

AST runs four main programs, including Support Services, Education, Research and Advocacy. The charity does not provide a breakdown of its spending per program.

Support Services: AST offers many resources to people with dementia, including First Link and Minds in Motion. First Link is a program that connects people affected by dementia to support, information, and other resources in their communities. Minds in Motion is a community-based program that encourages physical activity and mental stimulation for people with early signs of dementia. AST's Music Project delivers musical performances to people living with dementia. In F2023, the charity provided 710 music packages across Ontario specifically tailored to each clients’ music taste. During the same year, AST also served 3,698 clients through its Active Living program.

Education: Alzheimer Society of Toronto works to educate healthcare professionals on how to provide the highest quality of care for patients with dementia. In F2023, students earned 1,940 certificates for the completion of education training and courses. AST’s U-First! program provides education and training to help healthcare providers understand dementia and associated behavioral changes, and how to work as a team to develop individualized support strategies for patients. In F2023, more than 1,500 participants completed the U-First! program offered through 12 e-learning courses for healthcare providers. During the same year, the charity hosted 8,637 education and awareness-raising events, including virtual staff-led education sessions and online learning.

Research: AST funds dementia research through the Alzheimer Society Research Program (ASRP). The program receives funding from provincial Alzheimer Societies, Alzheimer Society of Canada and outside donors. ASRP gives grants to researchers working to improve the quality of life for those affected by dementia and to gain a deeper understanding of the biomedical foundations of the disease. In F2023, the charity supported ten new research projects in Ontario.

Advocacy: In F2023, AST met with nearly 200 major party candidates during the provincial election to make dementia a ballot box issue.
