OVERVIEW

About Mackenzie Health Foundation:

Mackenzie Health Foundation is a 3-star charity. It has reasonable overhead costs. However, it only posts its most recent year's financial statements on its website and has a below-average results reporting grade.

Established in 1977, Mackenzie Health Foundation raises funds for the two Mackenzie Health locations in Richmond Hill and Vaughan, Ontario. It aims to “inspire inspirational gifts” and provide grants for capital projects, medical equipment, technology, and educational opportunities.

In F2022, the foundation granted $27.8m to Mackenzie Health. Mackenzie Health oversees Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital and the newly opened Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital.

On June 6, 2021 Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital officially opened after opening in February 2021 to provide additional space and relieve the pressures caused by covid-19. The hospital is 1.2 million square feet and features a 37,000 square foot emergency department, a 12,000 square foot pharmacy, and an additional 21 critical care beds. Its mental health unit has two courtyards, a gym, and a sensory calming room. In the first eight weeks the hospital was open, 229 patients were transferred to Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital from hospitals across the Greater Toronto Area. As of May 26, 2021, 508 patients were transferred to Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital. In the first six months of opening, 1,776 babies were delivered at the hospital.

Mackenzie Health Foundation also supports Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital and community based-services, a well as patient care and education/training in its two hospitals. The new Orlando Corporation Ambulatory Surgical & Procedures Centre at Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital has 16 new procedure suites, up from 12 previously. During F2021, in response to covid-19 Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital opened two dedicated covid-19 units and two covid-19 assessment centres. Also in F2021, Mackenzie Health Foundation gave 19 bursaries to Mackenzie Health employees to help them pursue educational opportunities.

Results and Impact

Mackenzie Health Foundation states that the population of York Region will grow by more than 35% in the next two decades. Since its opening, Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital has doubled York Region’s access to health care.

The Sorbara District Stroke Centre for York Region team received two awards in F2021. The awards recognized Mackenzie Health for its use of data to reduce the time it takes for patients to receive tissue plasminogen activator (a medication which breaks apart blood clots) when they are having a stroke. In 2016, the amount of time it took from when a patient arrived at the hospital to when the medication was administered was 53.5 minutes. In 2019, it was 27 minutes. This is three minutes faster than the provincial target of 30 minutes.

Mackenzie Hospital Foundation also reports that as of fall 2021, nearly 900 patients avoided hospital admission because of their participation in the covid-19 home monitoring program.

Finances

Mackenzie Health Foundation received $31.1m in donations and special events revenue in F2022. Fundraising and administrative costs are 17% of total revenues (less investment income). For each dollar donated, 83 cents go to the cause. This is within Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending.

Mackenzie Health Foundation has funding reserves of $20.8m dollars. Funding reserves can cover 9 months of grant expenses at the F2022 level. The foundation’s financial statements do not differentiate between board-endowed funds and donor-endowed funds.

This charity report is an update that has been sent to Mackenzie Health Foundation for review. Changes and edits may be forthcoming.
