OVERVIEW

About Mission Old Brewery:

Mission Old Brewery is a 4-star charity. It has a B+ results reporting grade, which is above average. For every dollar donated to the charity, 79 cents are available to go to the cause, which is within Ci's reasonable range.

Founded in 1980, Mission Old Brewery (MOB) helps people find stable housing to break the homeless cycle in Montreal. MOB offers emergency shelters and affordable housing options to meet the immediate needs of homeless people. The charity also runs transition programs and physical and mental health programs to help prevent people from falling back into homelessness.

MOB has three main programs: Emergency Services and Support, Preventing and Ending Homelessness, and Services for Women.

Emergency Services and Support aims to provide people basic life necessities like water, food, shelter, and clothing. Café Mission Keurig is a café that offers homeless people free coffee, internet access, and a place to stay during the day. The charity’s counsellors converse with homeless people visiting the café to build trust. The café is Montreal’s only coffeehouse that is open to both the public and homeless, breaking down typical social barriers. The café was open 186 days in F2022. 20,273 people used its services in F2022. The charity also runs a Shuttle Bus program. It begins each winter on December 1st. A driver and crisis counsellor drive the streets of Montreal between 2:30pm and 3:00am every night, inviting homeless men and women to be transported to places that will ensure their safety for the night. In F2022, the bus provided 11,265 trips to 6,299 women and 5,036 men. MOB’s warming centre provides a temporary place for homeless people to stay. It received 3,539 visitors at an average occupancy rate of 89% in F2022.

Preventing and Ending Homelessness offers a variety of services in efforts to end chronic homelessness. Included are five affordable housing programs in Montreal totalling 112 apartments, of which 14 are for seniors and 38 are for women. The program offers services for mental and physical health.

Services for Women focuses on women-only housing units and transition services. Les Voisines (The Neighbours) provides housing projects for women to promote social inclusion and community. Les Voisines du PMP housed 38 women into permanent housing in F2022. Its Les Voisines de Lanaudière provided transitional housing for nine women in F2022.

Finances

This financial analysis reflects the consolidated financial position of Mission Old Brewery and the Mission Old Brewery Foundation (The Foundation). Mission Old Brewery also exerts effective control over the Patricia Mackenzie Pavilion and Maison Roger Beaulieu, which are two separate registered charities. Neither charity is included in this analysis.

Ci typically uses the charity's T3010 to reconcile MOB's audited financial statements as the charity does not use activity based costing. MOB's F2023 T3010 is not yet available. Ci put expense line items into areas of best fit.

Mission Old Brewery received $7.8m in donations in F2023. It also received $11.8m in government funding in F2023, representing 52% of total revenue in F2023. Administrative costs are 1% of revenue (excluding investment income), and fundraising costs are 20% of donations. This results in total overhead spending of 21%. For every dollar donated to the charity, 79 cents are available to go to the cause, which is within Ci’s reasonable range.

MOB has $17.2m in reserve funds, which can cover 120%, or one year and two months of its annual program costs.

Compensation information reflects combined compensation schedules from MOB and the Foundation based on F2022 T3010 CRA filings.

This charity report is an update that has been sent to Mission Old Brewery for review. Changes and edits may be forthcoming.
