About Wateraid Canada:
WaterAid Canada is a 4-star rated charity with good demonstrated impact and an average results reporting grade. However, it has persistently high fundraising leading to overhead spending outside of Charity Intelligence’s reasonable range. In 2021, fundraising costs were 34% of donations.
Founded in 1987, WaterAid Canada is one of seven WaterAid member branches that fund operations for WaterAid’s global programs. Its mission is to improve access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) in the world’s poorest areas. According to WaterAid Canada, 771 million people do not have access to clean water close to home. In F2022, WaterAid Canada worked in Burkina Faso, India, Liberia, Malawi, Pakistan, and Sierra Leone.
In F2022, WaterAid Canada spent $2.6m on WASH programs (93% of total program costs). It also spent $204k on its public engagement program in Canada (7% of program costs).
Water Access: During F2022, WaterAid Canada worked in Burkina Faso to fix water access points in four schools.
Sanitation: In Malawi, WaterAid Canada constructed and fixed 132 handwashing facilities and 99 bathrooms. During F2022, it fixed ten school latrines in Burkina Faso and six school latrines in Liberia.
Hygiene: In F2022, WaterAid Canada reached over 23,000 people in India with covid-19 hygiene campaigns. It also reached over 13,000 people in Malawi with hygiene campaigns.

Results and Impact
WaterAid Canada reports that in F2022, it reached 1,521,656 people with clean water, 1,552,115 people with decent toilets, and 8,295,637 people with good hygiene.
WaterAid Canada’s Project Boond works to help improve access to WASH services in Bihar State, India. During F2022, it fixed 13 water access points that provide water to 1,500 people. It also constructed or fixed water access points in three schools that provide drinking water and handwashing stations to 721 students and teachers.
While Charity Intelligence highlights these key results, they may not be a complete representation of WaterAid Canada’s results.
Charity Intelligence gave WaterAid Canada an impact rating of Good for demonstrated impact per dollar spent.

In F2022, WaterAid Canada received $1.5m in donations. Fundraising costs are 34% of donations and administrative costs are 8% of total revenues. This results in total overhead spending of 42%. For each dollar donated, 58 cents go to the cause. This is outside of Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending.
Net reserve funds of $2.0m can cover program costs for 8 months. This is a 43% decrease from funding reserves of $3.5m in F2021, due to a decrease in government revenue (see financial notes).
