OVERVIEW
About Right to Play :
Right To Play is a three-star charity with an average impact rating. It has an above average results reporting grade and overhead spending outside Ci's reasonable range. The charity is financially transparent; however it does not separate international, government, and Canadian donations.
Founded in 2000, Right To Play (RTP) is an international charity that works to educate and empower children who live in poor and dangerous regions. Right To Play wants to give children the education and skills they need to rise above adversity and create a peaceful and equitable world. The charity focuses on educating children through play-based games and sports. Its main charitable programs are Education, Health and Well-Being, Child Protection, and Gender Equality. In F2022, RTP spent $51.4m on its international programs and $1.7m on public awareness and education. The charity does not provide a spending breakdown of its programs on its website. Overall, RTP reports it helped 2.8 million children through its programs in F2022.
Right To Play’s Education program focuses on helping students stay engaged in school and build life skills like confidence, courage, and cooperation. The charity trains teachers on how to use play-based learning to create a supportive environment in the classroom. RTP reports that it works with Ministries of Education to incorporate play-based learning into the education systems of the different regions it operates in. In F2022, RTP trained 101,514 teachers on how to deliver play-based lessons.
The Health and Well-Being program aims to educate children on important topics such as HIV, malaria, and general reproductive health. After the Pakistan flood, RTP changed its programming to provide 1,000 hygiene kits to affected families in F2022.
The charity’s Child Protection program teaches children how to guard themselves against violence, discrimination, and exploitation. RTP encourages teachers to talk to their students about unsafe situations like child marriage and child labour. In Tanzania, RTP helped 8,624 children with disabilities participate in class in F2022.
The Gender Equality program focuses on combating dangerous practices like female genital mutilation and child marriage. RTP educates parents and teachers on how to promote gender equality and reduce gender discrimination in classrooms and at home.

Finances
In F2022, RTP reports that it received $62.8m in donations. Right To Play does not report government funding separately from donations on its audited financial statements. It also does not report Canadian donations separately from international donations. Ci used RTP's T3010 filing with the CRA to repot government funding and Canadian donations. Ci calculates that the charity received $13.9m in donations in F2022.
The charity reports fundraising costs as a sum for all its international locations. Ci reports fundraising costs for only Canadian donations. Fundraising costs are 37% of Canadian donations, and administrative costs are 6% of revenue. This results in total overhead spending of 43%. For every dollar donated to the charity, 57 cents are available to go to the cause, which is outside Ci’s reasonable range.
Right To Play has $39.0m in reserve funds. Its reserve funds can cover 73%, or under nine months of its annual program costs.
In F2021, RTP paid $598k to external fundraisers. In F2020, the charity paid $367k to external fundraisers. The charity's T3010 filing with the CRA does not report how much revenue was collected by external fundraisers in either year as the external fundraisers raise money to be directly sent to RTP.
This charity report is an update that has been sent to Right To Play for review. Comments and edits may be forthcoming.
