OVERVIEW

About ShelterBox Canada:

ShelterBox Canada is a 5-star charity. It is financially transparent and has reasonable overhead costs. The charity has a Good demonstrated impact rating. With its current reserve funds the charity can cover six months of annual program costs.

Beginning as a Rotary Club project in 2000 and then registered under the global ShelterBox network in 2010, ShelterBox Canada (SBC) provides emergency shelter and support to those in need around the world. It distributes aid by working with local partners and deploying teams to disaster areas. It also has a permanent team in the Philippines.

ShelterBox responds to disasters by first understanding the specific needs of those affected by the emergency. Based on this analysis, it sends ShelterBoxes and ShelterKits to vulnerable people. ShelterBoxes can include solar lights, water storage and purification equipment, thermal blankets, and cooking utensils. ShelterKits can include toolkits, ropes, and tarpaulins to make emergency shelters, repair buildings, or create new homes. Both ShelterBoxes and ShelterKits are adapted for every disaster or region to best fit the community’s needs.

In F2023, ShelterBox Canada provided shelter and other emergency aid to 414,850 people in 11 countries. In F2023, the charity responded to emergencies in the Philippines, Somalia, Türkiye, Syria, Ukraine, Yemen, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Mozambique.

Results and Impact

SBC reports that through its program, 15,000 lives were changed by Canadian donors in F2023. ShelterBox also conducts surveys to assess the impact of its shelter provision. In F2023, ShelterBox helped families in Türkiye following the earthquakes. 79% of families said their living conditions improved because of the support they received from ShelterBox. The charity also provided help for individuals affected by the Ukrainian war. 100% of people said that the thermal blankets provided by ShelterBox kept them warm and comfortable.

While Ci highlights these key results, they may not be a complete representation of ShelterBox’s results and impact.

Charity Intelligence has given ShelterBox Canada a Good impact rating for demonstrated social impact per dollar spent.
