Founded in 1981, Salvation Army Yellowknife Corps and Resource Centre is a regional branch of Salvation Army Canada. These charities work to “share the love of Jesus Christ, meet human needs, and be a transforming influence.” Salvation Army started as a Christian outreach program to spread religious teachings to people experiencing homelessness and poverty. Eventually, the charity started providing social services as well. Salvation Army Yellowknife helps people in Yellowknife and other nearby, remote communities.  

Salvation Army Yellowknife has four main programs: Church, Community Services, Sheltering, and Addiction & Mental Health. The charity does not provide a breakdown of its spending on its programs.  

For its Church program, Salvation Army Yellowknife leads weekly worship services, Bible Study classes, and ministry meetings. The charity aims to offer spiritual support and comfort to people in need.  

Salvation Army Yellowknife’s Community Services program provides food, clothing, and Christmas support to those in need. The charity also runs programs to help people find jobs or access social services. Salvation Army Yellowknife provides a Christmas meal for over 700 families each year. 

Within its Sheltering program, Salvation Army Yellowknife runs two shelters for homeless men. Its Emergency Shelter has 31 sleeping spaces for people experiencing chronic homelessness. The Bailey House provides transitional housing and has 32 beds and four private rooms. The charity provides two meals a day to people staying in these shelters. There is also a Resource Centre to help people find employment and permanent housing.  

Salvation Army Yellowknife’s Addiction and Mental Health Services program supports people as they go through withdrawal or mental health struggles. The charity leads a Christ-centered recovery program to help people stop using drugs. The charity also has a mental health caseworker to help people with persistent mental illnesses.

For F2022, Charity Intelligence received incomplete financial statements from the CRA for Salvation Army Yellowknife. These statements do not have a Cash Flows Statement or any notes. It is unclear if these statements have been audited. Prior to F2021, Charity Intelligence only received financial statements for Salvation Army in Canada & Bermuda and had to use the CRA T3010 filing to find information for Salvation Army Yellowknife. 

Salvation Army Yellowknife had total donations and special events revenues of $2.5m in F2022. Administrative costs are 4% of revenues (excluding investment income) and fundraising costs are less than 1% of donations. For every dollar donated, slightly more than 95 cents go to the cause. This is outside Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending. When overhead costs are this low, it is likely that the charity may not be reporting accurately. 

Salvation Army Yellowknife has $2.2m in reserve funds. The charity can cover six months of annual program costs using its current reserves.
