About True Patriot Love Foundation :
True Patriot Love Foundation is a 2-star, financially transparent charity. It has a below average results reporting grade and its overhead spending is outside of Ci's reasonable range. The charity has $6.5m in reserve funds, which can cover two years of program costs.
Founded in 2009, True Patriot Love Foundation (TPL) raises money to fund programs that support Canadian military, veterans and their families. TPL funds programs that fit into four focus areas: Stronger Military Families, Well-being and Mental Health, Rehabilitation and Recovery, and Connection with Communities. Since 2009, TPL states that it has committed over $37 million to fund research and support 979 community-based programs across Canada, impacting over 38,340 lives. The charity does not provide a breakdown of program costs.
In F2022, True Patriot Love Foundation reports granting over $1.6 million to 34 programs from 22 charities. The charities that received the biggest grants were Support Our Troops ($293k), Wounded Warriors Canada ($196k) and Veterans Transition Network ($180k). The charity reports that its work impacted over 740 people in F2022. The charity does not indicate which grants are associated with the four focus areas.
Stronger Military Families programming addresses the needs of military and veteran families. True Patriot Love reports that children in military families experience double the rate of mental health issues compared to children in civilian families.
Well-being and Mental Health programs acknowledge the effects that military service can have on those who serve and their families. TPL reports that 41% of Canadian Armed Forces personnel who are medically released suffer from mental health injury or illness. The charity’s Bell True Patriot Love Fund supports organizations that provide immediate mental health support for the military community. Since 2013, the fund has provided 124 grants to organizations across Canada.
Rehabilitation and Recovery programs provide accommodations that help severely injured military members and their families adjust to civilian life. TPL reports that 60% of military personnel who are medically released have permanent physical limitations whereas 42% suffer from musculoskeletal injuries.
Connection with Communities programs aim to foster connection with communities through mentorships, volunteering and advocacy. The charity states that 39% of veterans report difficulty in adjusting to civilian life.

True Patriot Love Foundation reported a change in fiscal year end from December to March, in 2020. The F2021 audited financial statement reflects financial activity from January 2020 to March 2021.
True Patriot Love Foundation received $4.2m in donations and special events fundraising in F2022, a 35% ($2.2m) drop from F2021. It also received $195k in donated goods in kind. Administrative costs are 9% of total revenue and fundraising costs are 30% of donations and special events fundraising. For every dollar donated to TPL, 61 cents go to the cause. This is outside Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending.
TPL has $6.5m in reserve funds, which can cover two years of annual program costs and grants spending. Reserve funds went from $1.4m in F2019 to over $6.0m in F2021 and F2022. This is mostly due to an increase in donations and governemnt funding in F2021.
