OVERVIEW

About Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation:

Founded in 1995, Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation (ORCF) is dedicated to increasing cancer survivorship in Eastern Ontario. ORCF hopes to help people living with cancer by providing residents with increased access to person-centered care. ORCF reports that each year in Eastern Ontario, 8,000 new cancer cases are diagnosed and 30,000 people are undergoing cancer treatment. ORCF has two main programs, Cancer Coaching and Grants.

Grants accounted for 54% of program spending in F2021. ORCF reports it funds research, clinical trials, equipment, and psychosocial oncology at hospitals in Eastern Ontario. The charity granted $1.1m in F2021, a 309% increase over grants of $269k in F2020. In F2021, ORCF reports $1.0m of its grants went to Ottawa Hospital. The charity does not report what this funding was used for within the hospital, or other recipients of its grants. In F2020, ORCF’s largest grants went to Ottawa Hospital Foundation ($121k), Queensway Carleton Hospital Foundation ($70k), and University of Ottawa ($30k).

Cancer Coaching accounted for 45% of program spending in F2021. The program pairs a personal cancer coach with a patient throughout their journey. The coach works with the patient to provide support, education, practical guidance, and aims to meet patients' health goals. In F2020, ORCF provided 1,051 sessions and supported 375 families through cancer coaching. This is a 17% decrease over 453 families supported in F2019. Some Cancer Coaching sessions are provided at a cost. A six-week group session costs approximately $50.

Results and Impact

In F2020, Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation reported its grants have allowed neurosurgeons in Ottawa to use the drug 5-Aminolevulinic Acid (5-ALA) in more brain surgeries. The drug allows brain cancer cells to illuminate under a special light, allowing for maximized removal of brain tumours. Currently, a single dose of the drug costs $2k and is not covered by insurance.

ORCF reports that 86% of Cancer Coaching participants report being more confident that they can do something about their cancer and/or wellbeing, and 87% say their quality of life has improved after completing the program.

While Ci highlights these key results, they may not be a complete representation of Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation’s results and impact. This charity is not yet rated on impact (n/r).

Finances

Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation has donations of $4.2m in F2021. The charity received $584k in government funding, representing 11% of total revenues. Administrative costs are 5% of revenues (less investment income) and fundraising costs are 46% of donations. This results in total overhead spending of 51%. For every dollar donated, 49 cents go to the cause. This is outside of Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending. The charity’s most recent T3010 was not available at the time of this update. As a result, administrative costs are likely underreported and fundraising costs are likely overreported.

Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation has $3.0m in funding reserves, of which $935k is donor endowed. Excluding donor-endowed funds, the charity could cover 107% or around one year of annual program costs with current reserves.

This charity report is an update that has been sent to Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation for review. Changes and edits may be forthcoming.
