OVERVIEW
About Muscular Dystrophy Canada:
Muscular Dystrophy Canada is a 3-star charity. It has an average results reporting score and is financially transparent. However, it has high overhead spending.
Founded in 1954, Muscular Dystrophy Canada (MDC) supports people living with neuromuscular disorders (NMDs). These conditions are incurable and cause progressive muscle weakness and dysfunction. MDC also funds research to improve treatments and find a cure for NMDs.
Muscular Dystrophy Canada has four main programs: Services, Research, Education & Information, and Advocacy.
Services accounted for 55% of program spending in F2022. This program funds equipment purchases, medical travel, and activities for those with NMDs. In F2022, Muscular Dystrophy Canada put 61% more funding towards equipment purchases than in F2021. The charity also had 420 people register with it during F2022.
Research accounted for 22% of program spending in F2022. This year, the charity invested $1.3 million in research. During F2022, it funded nine new research projects and five fellowships. Of these fellowships, three were for clinical researchers and two were for post-doctoral researchers.
Education and Information accounted for 16% of program spending in F2022. MDC provides information for people with NMDs, family members, and healthcare professionals. Currently, Muscular Dystrophy Canada has 12 resources on its website.
Advocacy is MDC's final major program, accounting for 7% of program spending in F2022. The charity hosted a conference about the transition to adulthood for people with NMDs. In total, the charity has released seven advocacy statements to push for new laws.

Results and Impact
Charity Intelligence found Muscular Dystrophy Canada reported many stories but little data on its work. In F2019, the charity’s advocacy work led the government to pass Bill C-81, the Accessible Canada Act. This bill prevents discrimination against people with disabilities. In F2022, 10 out of the 13 provinces and territories advanced their newborn screening policies for spinal muscular atrophy after MDC’s advocacy campaigns. Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Yukon, Nunavut, and Ontario have screening policies in place. Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island are planning screening policies.
While Ci highlights these key results, they may not be a complete representation of Muscular Dystrophy Canada’s results and impact. This charity is not yet rated on impact (n/r).

Finances
Muscular Dystrophy Canada has donations of $5.9m in F2022. The charity received $587k in government funding, representing 7% of total revenues. Administrative costs are 30% of revenues (less investment income) and fundraising costs are 30% of donations. This results in total overhead spending of 60%. For every dollar donated, 40 cents go to the cause. This is outside of Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending. MDC has been outside of this range since its first analysis in 2012.
Muscular Dystrophy Canada has $9.2m in funding reserves. The charity could cover 148% or around one year and six months of annual program costs with current reserves.
This charity report is an update that has been sent to Muscular Dystrophy Canada for review. Changes and edits may be forthcoming.
