About Mennonite Central Committee Ontario:

Mennonite Central Committee Ontario is a 5-star charity with high results reporting grade and reasonable overhead spending. The charity is financially transparent and has funding reserves that can cover less than a year of program costs.

Founded in 1967, Mennonite Central Committee Ontario (MCC Ontario) is a Christian charity that provides aid to people in vulnerable communities. MCC Ontario is one of five provincial divisions of Mennonite Central Committee Canada (MCC Canada). MCC Canada works with Mennonite Central Committee U.S. to form Mennonite Central Committee International (MCC). MCC works with local churches across the globe to provide basic necessities and peacebuilding training to people. In addition to MCC Canada's own programs, MCC Ontario provides funding to MCC Canada for its programs.

A Charity Intelligence 2023 Top 100 Rated Charity

In F2022, the charity spent 78% of program and grant spending on MCC Canada programs. MCC Canada’s three main program areas are Sustainable Development, Disaster Response, and Peacebuilding. MCC Canada worked on 496 projects in 45 countries during F2022. Its programs reached 925,662 people.

MCC Ontario spent 7% of program and grant costs on Migration and Resettlement. In F2022, it supported 136 active sponsoring groups as they went through the refugee sponsorship process. It helped 569 newcomers establish themselves in Canada.

In F2022, MCC Ontario spent 7% of program and grant costs on Food and Sustainable Livelihoods. 15 People’s Action Group Members advocated for affordable housing.

MCC Ontario spent 4% of program and grant costs on Restorative Justice. It helped 61 recently released individuals find communities and addressed their spiritual needs. It supported 45 people convicted of sex offenses in maintaining crime-free lives. It also gave 11 individuals active bystander training.

The remaining 4% of program spending was spent on humanitarian relief, peacebuilding, and education.

Results and Impact

Internationally, the funding provided in F2022 to MCC Canada helped give 169,603 people emergency food assistance, give 68,680 people access to water, and helped 279 refugees come to Canada. MCC Canada’s work on education in South Sudan helped 97% of vulnerable children in the program advance to the next grade. Its health program in Haiti helped ensure that 90% of new mothers in a region get pre- and post-natal health screenings and are referred to other care if needed.

Locally, MCC Ontario helped six individuals secure meaningful employment through its Raw Carrot Soup enterprise.

While Ci highlights these key results, they may not be a complete representation of Mennonite Central Committee of Ontario’s results and impact.

Finances

In F2022, MCC Ontario received $17.2m in donations and special events revenues. It also received $1.1m in government funding and $482k in donated goods in kind. In F2022, net thrift shop revenues were $2.7m (12% of total revenues).

Fundraising costs are 5% of donations and administrative costs are 4% of revenues (less investment income). Total overhead costs are 9%. For each dollar donated, 91 cents go to the cause. This is within Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending.

MCC Ontario has gross reserve funds of $15.3m and interest-bearing liabilities of $7.0m. Net reserve funds of $8.3m can cover program and grant costs for just under seven months.
