About Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals:

Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is a 3-star charity. It is financially transparent and has overhead costs within Ci’s reasonable range. The charity has $26.5m in reserve funds, which can cover three years and a half of program costs.

Founded in 1873, Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA) works to ensure animal wellbeing in Ontario and keep pets and families together. The charity provides shelter care, medical assisstance and adoption services for animals across the province. OSPCA is headquartered in Stouffville, Ontario and has 13 animal centers across the province. OSPCA’s two main programs are Animal Care and Protection and Communication and Education. In previous years, the charity also garnted to OSPCA partners. 

The Animal Care and Protection program accounts for 93% of program spending in F2022. This includes adoption services, lost animal care, shelter care, medical procedures and shelter transfers. In F2022, OSPCA delivered 226,813 lb of pet food, supporting 51 food banks and distribution partners. The charity reports that it distributed 200 outdoor shelters for community cats and loaned 55 live traps through the Trap-Neuter-Return program. The charity transferred 137 animals in F2022.

Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals spayed/neutered 6,785 animals in F2022. This includes 2,414 female cats spayed and 1,890 male cats neutered. The charity adds that its mobile clinic made ten stops and spayed/neutered 557 cats.

Communication and Education accounts for the other 7% of program spending. OSPCA runs the AnimalSmart™ program, which teaches children how to develop positive relationships with animals and care for them. OSPCA also advocates for change in animal welfare legislation.

Results and Impact

In F2022, OSPCA reports 3,918 animal adoptions. This includes 2,693 cats, 911 dogs, 274 small animals and 40 birds. It adds that 689 lost animals were reunited with their families and that it saved 513 lives through animal transfers. The charity states that 16 animal transfers allowed animals to find new homes.

Thanks to its spay procedures, OSPCA reports that is avoided 325,431 potential unplanned offspring in F2022. This approximation is based on the average reproductive lifespan of the female animal spayed and does not include offspring of offspring.

While Ci highlights these key results, they may not be a complete representation of Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ results and impact.
