OVERVIEW
About North York General Hospital Foundation:
Founded in 1968, North York General Hospital Foundation (NYGH Foundation) raises money to buy equipment, upgrade facilities, and support research at North York General Hospital (NYGH). The hospital sees over 420,000 patients every year, and in F2020, facilitated 4,954 births, 29,491 admissions, and 359,956 outpatient visits. In Newsweek's 2020 rankings of Canadian hospitals, North York General ranked fourth in Canada.
In F2021, NYGH Foundation granted $9.7 million to the Hospital for use in its programs not covered by the government, such as purchase of state-of-the-art technology. The Foundation provides the Hospital funding for four main areas: Equipment and Technology; Capital Upgrades and Renovations; Research and Innovation; and Cancer Care. No spending breakdown by program was provided by the charity.
Equipment and Technology: The Foundation funds the maintenance and/or purchase of critical, day-to-day equipment that needs repair or is at the end of its lifespan. Purchasing advanced technology also ensures patients have access to the best care at NYGH. Some equipment funded in F2020 includes: an ECG gating machine, an immunehematology analyzer, birthing beds, a CT scanner and portable ultrasounds. The Foundation reported that pre-covid-19, the Medical Imaging Department was doing around 250,000 tests a year.
Capital Upgrades and Renovations: Grants to Capital Upgrades and Renovations allow for hospital expansion, and hence, increased capacity for healthcare delivery. A recent focus of this program is expanding the Charlotte & Lewis Steinberg Emergency Department (ED). North York General Hospital's ED treats around 129,000 patients a year, with over 80% of those treated discharged without being admitted as inpatients as the ED is "bursting at its seams". The Foundation has a goal of raising $11 million for the expansion of the ED, and to develop a new Mental Health Emergency Services Unit.
Research and Innovation: The Foundation reports that NYGH was the first community hospital affiliated with the University of Toronto for research, and is an integral learning site for medical students and other clinical learners. In F2020, five research chairs were awarded funding, and there were 113 nursing and allied health award recipients.
Cancer Care: North York General Hospital has several clinics dedicated to caring for cancer patients, including the BMO Breast Diagnostic Clinic. NYGH Foundation reports that from 2014-2019, the Hospital saw 16,000 cancer patients.

Results and Impact
The Foundation reports that by financially supporting the renovation of the Cardiac Care Clinic, the care experience for more than 4,000 patient visits was improved. Specifically, the renovation increased accessibility for patients with mobility issues, and increased capacity to accommodate patients bringing family support to their appointments.
NYGH Foundation also highlighted a study conducted by lead investigator Veselina Stefanova, which was published in the Journal of Urology. Syefanova's study provides evidence that the TPBx approach for testing and diagnosing prostate cancer has significantly fewer complication rates versus the traditional prostate biopsy method. Considering only 1% of testing for prostate cancer in North America is done using TPBx, the findings of this study could be used to improve patient care.
Charity Intelligence highlights these key results. They may not be a complete representation of North York General Hospital Foundation's results. Charity Intelligence has not assessed impact on NYGH Foundation. This shows as n/r, meaning not rated.

Finances
North York General Hospital Foundation had donations and special events revenue of $14.2m in F2021. Administrative costs are 13% of revenues and fundraising costs are 13% of donations. For every $1 raised, 74 cents go to the cause, which is within Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending.
NYGH Foundation has $100.0m in funding reserves, which can cover program costs for 10.3 years. The Foundation has an Endowment Fund with a balance of $70.0m in F2021. As the charity does not disclose the proportion of the Endowment Fund that is donor endowed, the Endowment Fund has been included in the program cost coverage ratio.
At the time of this analysis, the charity's F2021 T3010 filing with the CRA is not available. Some values may need to be adjusted once it is posted.
This charity report is an update that has been sent to North York General Hospital Foundation for review. Changes and edits may be forthcoming.
