Movember Canada is a 3-star charity with reasonable overhead spending and a below average results reporting grade. The charity has large funding reserves of $65.5m that can cover over five years of annual programing.

Established in 2011, Movember Canada (MVC) is the Canadian arm of the Movember Foundation (MVF) which was founded in 2003. MVF is an Australian-based charity that raises awareness and funds for men’s health. It focuses on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health. According to the charity, prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men worldwide. Across Canada, more than 217,000 men are living with and beyond prostate cancer. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in men aged 15-39 globally. In relation to mental health, the charity states males account for 75% of suicides in Canada.

Movember Canada runs the annual Movember campaign where participants grow a moustache during November to raise awareness of men's health issues. MVC has funded more than 1,250 men’s health projects worldwide since its founding. MVC does not disclose a spending breakdown by program.

Mental health and suicide prevention programs: Movember Canada funds mental health and suicide prevention projects in collaboration with local health partners. In F2022, MVC opened the Churchill Wellness Centre. It is Canada’s first subarctic Indigenous mental health addictions centre. Movember Canada continued its DadHERO program, aimed to help incarcerated fathers transition back to everyday life. This program is now available through 11 federal and provincial institutions in Canada.

Prostate and testicular cancer programs: Movember Canada funds research on causes, detection, and treatment of prostate and testicular cancer. MVC also provides information and support to adults with prostate and testicular cancer. There have been 27 prostate cancer projects involving Canada since 2003.

Movember Canada received $24.2m in donations in F2022. Administrative costs are 5% of revenues and fundraising costs are 14% of donations. This results in 19% of donations going towards overhead spending. For every dollar donated, 81 cents go to the cause. This falls within Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending.

MVC has $65.5m in reserve funds. These funds are MVC’s cash and investments. With is current reserves, MVC can cover 5.2 years of annual program costs.

In F2022 MVC paid external fundraisers $81k. These external fundraisers raised $421k in donations. This means it costs MVC $0.19 to raise $1 using external fundraisers.    

In F2022, Movember Canada granted $1.7m ($2.0m in F2021) to Canadian Cancer Society, which amalgamated with Prostate Cancer Canada in 2020.

From our financial review in June 2023, we highlight Financial Notes 4 and 6 in Movember's audited financial statements. These notes are about Movember Canada's related party transactions:

• Movember Canada paid Movember Australia $5.6m in F2022, $4.6m in F2021, and $4.4m in F2020. These payments are 23%, 19%, and 22% of Movember Canada's total donations, respectively. These payments are for services provided to Movember Canada by Movember Australia.
• Movember Canada has the same directors as Movember Australia.
• Movember Canada allocates these payments to Australia's headquarters as program costs, fundraising costs, and administrative costs. Charity Intelligence's analysis has presented these payments as reported.
• Also, Movember Canada is part of the global Movember network along with Movember USA, Movember UK, Movember Germany, Movember Europe (Netherlands), and Movember New Zealand. These national chapters are all governed by the same directors as Movember Australia. Movember Canada pays and receives money from these other Movember charities. Financial Note 4 doesn't disclose the total amount of payments between the Movember charities. It does disclose that, at year-end of F2022, Movember Canada owed $338k to Movember Australia, it owed $2k to Movember USA, and is owed $96k from Movember Germany.
