OVERVIEW

About Women's Centre of York Region:

Women’s Centre of York Region is a small 3-star charity. The charity has low overhead costs and is financially transparent. Women’s Centre of York Region has a C in results reporting and reports little on the results of its funding.

Founded in 1977, Women’s Centre of York Region (WCYR) works to improve the lives of women facing domestic violence, financial insecurity, and unemployment. WCYR reports that due to the covid-19 pandemic, domestic violence has increased by 30%, and women's participation in the labour market has fallen to its lowest numbers since 1999. In F2021, WCYR’s programs served 768 women seeking positive changes in their lives.

Women’s Centre of York Region mainly focuses on two programs: Group Programs and One-on-One Programs.

WCYR runs three different Group Programs where women can develop skills to improve their lives. Women attend sessions once or twice a week for five to ten weeks. The Enterprising Careers program helps women find fulfilling and sustainable job opportunities. In F2021, WCYR delivered 10 career-related seminars and reached 130 women. The Financial Empowerment course teaches goal-setting, budgeting and financial saving. In F2021, the program provided 10 seminars to 131 women. Making Changes is a life skills program that encompasses communication skills, confidence, and personal relationships. In F2019, 360 women took part in the Making Changes program.

Women’s Centre of York Region offers free One-on-One Programs to address emotional, social, and economic issues. WCYR offers three types of individual programs. Individual Counselling provides emotional support to women seeking to manage anxiety, depression, and other personal struggles. Transitional Support Counselling supports women attempting to leave abusive relationships safely. The Soft Skills Coaching program provides training in personal and professional skills. In F2021, WCYR provided 1,570 hours of counselling to 135 women.

Finances

Women’s Centre of York Region is a small charity in terms of donations, with donations of $618k in F2021. It received $484k in government funding, representing 44% of total revenues. Administrative costs are 4% of revenues and fundraising costs are 4% of donations. This results in total overhead spending of 8%. For every dollar donated to the charity, 92 cents go to the cause. This falls within Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending.

Women’s Centre of York Region has funding reserves of $347k which can cover just over six months of annual program costs.

The charity reports zero part-time employees in its T3010 filing with the CRA; however, it lists spending of $236k on part-time employees. There is likely an error in its reported information.

This charity report is an update that has been sent to Women’s Centre of York Region for review. Changes and edits may be forthcoming.
