OVERVIEW
About Osteoporosis Canada:
Osteoporosis Canada is a 3-star rated charity with an above-average results reporting score. It is financially transparent and has overhead costs outside Ci’s reasonable range.
Founded in 1982, Osteoporosis Canada (OC) is the only national organization serving people who have, or are at risk for, osteoporosis. It supports Canadians living with osteoporosis through education, advocacy, and investing in research. Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue, leading to an increased risk of fractures. OC reports that over 2.3 million Canadians are affected by osteoporosis. At least one in three women and one in five men will break a bone due to osteoporosis in their lifetime.
Osteoporosis Canada offers access to free publications, educational programs, and referrals to community resources. OC also works with healthcare professionals to develop practice guidelines and standards for physicians to use in their clinical practice. It works towards its mission with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, Ontario Women’s Health Council, and health care and research professionals.
OC works to educate Canadians about the risks, incidence, and prevention of osteoporosis. The tools available on its website include its Calcium Calculator Tool and Risk Tool. In F2022, the charity reported 31,301 completions of the Calcium Calculator Tool and 7,319 completions of the Risk Tool. OC also hosted 27 programs, 95 support group sessions, and 19 webinars in F2022.
Osteoporosis Canada also focuses on raising awareness for osteoporosis. In F2022, OC reported 384,176 English web users and 104,480 French web users. The charity published 370 total posts on social media, including 20 new videos. It also released 25 blog posts and nine podcasts, and sent 151 mass emails in F2022.

Results and Impact
Osteoporosis Canada has been working closely with the Public Health Agency of Canada over the past years assisting in the collection of data in Canada’s Chronic Disease Surveillance System. In 2020, the Public Health Agency of Canada published a report, Osteoporosis and Related Fractures in Canada, detailing key findings.
Additionally, in F2022, the charity reported over 1.2 million page visits to its website in English and over 182,000 visits in French. In F2022, OC’s 25 new blog posts had 52,493 viewers and its nine podcasts had 18,150 listens.
While Ci highlights these key results, they may not be a complete representation of Osteoporosis Canada’s results and impact. This charity is not yet rated on impact (n/r).

Finances
Osteoporosis Canada received $1.8m in donations in F2022. It also received $3.9m in government funding, representing 67% of total revenues.

For every dollar donated to the charity, 40 cents go to the cause. This falls outside of Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending and has since 2012.
OC has reserve funds of $4.5m which could cover one year and one month of annual program costs.
