About Centraide of Greater Montreal (United Way Montreal):

Centraide Montreal is a 5-star charity. It is financially transparent, has reasonable overhead costs, and has an above-average results reporting score of A-.

Founded in 1966, Centraide of Greater Montreal (Centraide Montreal) raises money to support charities in Montreal and Laval. Its mission is to improve the quality of life in the community and empower vulnerable members to take charge of their lives. Funded charities deliver programs that align with one of Centraide Montreal’s four priority areas: For Inclusive Communities, For Young People’s Present and Future Success, For Decent Living Conditions, and For a Strong and Cohesive Social Fabric.

A Charity Intelligence 2023 Top 100 Rated Charity

For Inclusive Communities – 30% of total program and grant spending. Centraide Montreal aims to build a diverse community that recognizes and respects the diversity of peoples’ experiences. In F2023, it funded 209 agencies and projects. Its funded programs helped 473 families in vulnerable situations sign leases and ten children with intellectual disabilities access classes.

For Young People’s Present and Future Success – 28% of program and grant spending. Centraide Montreal funds local agencies that support youth from early childhood through their early careers. It also supports families to ensure that children can reach their potential. In F2023, it funded 177 agencies and projects. This includes ten summer camps and four community centres.

For Decent Living Conditions – 21% of program and grant spending. Centraide Montreal funds agencies that help provide access to affordable housing and food. In F2023, it funded 136 agencies and projects. 36 of these agencies were food banks or similar organizations. It also created one housing working group.

For a Strong and Cohesive Social Fabric – 21% of program and grant spending. In F2023, Centraide Montreal worked to help local agencies build capacity and expand their work in the community. It provided funding to 163 agencies and projects. It held five digital transition orientation webinars that had 826 participants.

Results and Impact

In F2021, Centraide of Greater Montreal funded L’Ancre des Jeunes, an agency in Verdun which supports school perseverance. The charity reports that 90% of young dropouts returned to school after their stay at L’Ancre des Jeunes.

Moisson Montréal is a charity that is funded by Centraide of Greater Montreal as a part of its Taking Care of the Essentials program. In F2021, Moisson Montréal reported that for each dollar it receives, it distributes $15 worth of food. This allows it to fulfill over 640,000 food aid requests each month.

In F2021, 78% of agencies that Centraide of Greater Montreal has supported through its covid-19 Emergency Fund reported that they helped people they would not have normally been able to reach.

Charity Intelligence consolidated the operating charity with its foundation using the foundation’s audited financial statements in F2023, F2022, and F2021. Centraide of Greater Montreal and Centraide of Greater Montreal Foundation have begun the process of merging. Approval of this merger is expected to take place in F2024.

Centraide of Greater Montreal is a Major 100 charity in terms of donations: in F2023, it received $71.0m in Canadian donations. Administrative costs are 9% of revenues (less investment income) and fundraising costs are 7% of donations. Total overhead spending is 16%. For each dollar donated, 84 cents go to the cause. This is within Ci’s reasonable range for overhead spending.

Reserve funds of $111.6m can cover program and grant costs for one year and nine months at the F2023 level. This includes $58.0m in investments held by the operating charity and $51.1m in investments held by the foundation.

Centraide of Greater Montreal’s T3010 filing with the CRA is not available at the time of this report. As such, compensation information reflects F2022. Centraide Montreal’s T3010 filing reports that its largest grant in F2022 was $2.1m to YMCAs of Quebec.
