About Union Gospel Mission:
Founded in 1940, Union Gospel Mission (UGM) aims to transform communities by improving the lives of those experiencing poverty, homelessness, and addiction. It provides a range of services through seven locations in Metro Vancouver and the city of Mission and reports serving over 320,000 meals annually.
Services include meals, shelter, outreach, alcohol and drug recovery, education and job preparation, affordable housing, and programs for children and families. In F2016, Union Gospel Mission served 338,480 meals and distributed 1,978 street toiletry kits as part of its outreach and meals program. UGM provides 439 units of affordable housing and has 72 beds in its emergency shelter for those in need. Of the recent graduates from UGM’s addiction and drug recovery programs, 60% have achieved one year of sobriety. Employment programs resulted in 35 people getting hired. UGM provided 703 family food hampers and 646 bundles of emergency baby supplies to women and families in 2016.
UGM controls the Union Gospel Mission, the Union Gospel Housing Society, the Union Gospel Heatley Housing Society, and the Union Gospel Mission Foundation. The Union Gospel Housing Society and Union Gospel (Heatley) Housing Society each operate two social housing projects. The B.C. government partially funds three of the projects and fully funds one. Established in 2001, the Union Gospel Mission Foundation exists to raise, distribute, and administer funding and support for the Mission. UGM does not consolidate the financial statements of its related parties. The financial analysis below is a consolidation of UGM and UGM Foundation.
Union Gospel Mission is a Major-100 charity with donations of $18.2m in F2016. This charity does not receive funding from the government as per its audited financials and T3010A filing with the CRA. Administrative costs were 7% of revenues and fundraising costs were 22% of donations. For each $1 donated, 71 cents go towards the cause, falling within Charity Intelligence’s reasonable range for overhead spending.
Union Gospel Mission is currently in debt due to mortgages of $11.6m. It has a program coverage ratio of (30%). Because it does not report receiving government grants, UGM depends on donations and income from rental properties and its thrift store to maintain operations.
This charity report is an update that is currently being reviewed by Union Gospel Mission. Changes and edits may be forthcoming.
