About Union Gospel Mission:

Union Gospel Mission is a 2-star charity with low demonstrated impact. The charity has reasonable overhead spending and is financially transparent. Founded in 1989, Union Gospel Mission (UGM) is a Christian charity that helps people overcome homelessness, addiction, and poverty. Union Gospel Mission is based in Vancouver, BC and operates in neighbouring cities. Currently, 3,634 people living in downtown Vancouver are experiencing homelessness. UGM reports that between January and October of 2021, 1,782 British Columbians passed away from opioid overdoses.   

Union Gospel Mission runs three main programs: Outreach & Recovery, Housing, and Education & Engagement.  

Outreach and Recovery accounted for 65% of program spending in F2022. Union Gospel Mission provides meals, clothing, and trauma-informed counselling to its clients. In F2022, the charity served 294,180 meals and distributed 1,904 food hampers. Additionally, it distributed 8,324 clothing items to clients in need.  

Housing represented 14% of program spending in F2022. Union Gospel Mission operates a 92-bed emergency shelter for homeless men. In F2022, the charity delivered 33,585 nights of safe shelter. UGM recently opened a Women & Families Centre that provides housing support for women overcoming addiction.  

Education and Engagement accounted for 13% of program spending in F2022. The charity operates youth programs to support children of low-income families. In F2022, 51 kids attended the charity's Eastsiders After School Program.  

Union Gospel Mission reports that it allocated the remaining 8% of program spending to other programs. It did not specify what these programs involve.

In F2022, Union Gospel Mission reported that 15 men had their lives transformed after completing the charity’s alcohol and drug recovery program. The charity also helped 75 families and 29 women in its shelters escape homelessness.
