About Dixon Hall Neighbourhood Services:

Dixon Hall Neighbourhood Services is a 2-star charity with Low demonstrated impact. It is financially transparent and has overhead spending within Ci’s reasonable range but has a below-average results reporting grade.

Founded in 1929, Dixon Hall helps poor and isolated people in Toronto, Ontario. Dixon Hall works with youth, seniors, adults with disabilities, people experiencing homelessness, unemployed people, newly immigrated families, and individuals struggling with mental health issues. The charity reports that it serves over 10,000 people annually. Dixon Hall has three main programs: Housing and Homelessness, Seniors, and Neighbourhood Services.

Housing and Homelessness program - 73% of total program spending: This program provides shelter services for homeless and precariously housed individuals and communities. In F2022, over 700,000 meals and 230,000 bed nights were provided in Dixon Hall’s shelter system. During the same year, the charity also conducted 6,500 harm-reduction interventions.

Seniors’ program - 13% of total program spending: The charity offers subsidized services, including meal delivery, community transportation, health and wellness, and adult day programs. In F2022, Dixon Hall made over 3,000 senior safety check calls through the Telephone Reassurance program. During the same year, Meals on Wheels delivered 67,635 meals. The charity also provided 4,446 supportive case management hours to seniors in F2022.

Neighbourhood Services - 7% of total program spending: Dixon Hall’s Neighbourhood Services department helps newcomers adjust to life in Canada. Dixon Hall also runs an income tax clinic, which completes free income tax returns for low-income individuals. In F2022, this program served 387 refugees and permanent residents.

The remaining 7% went to the Employment program and other services.

Results and Impact

Dixon Hall reported that it moved more than 100 people experiencing homelessness into permanent housing in F2022. For the Employment program, among 180 individuals who received job search support from the charity, 100 people were employed.

While Ci highlights these key results, they may not be a complete representation of Dixon Hall’s results and impact.

In F2022, Dixon Hall had total donations of $2.1m. The charity received $21.6m in government funding, representing 88% of total revenues. Administrative costs are 9% of revenues, and fundraising costs are 21% of donations. This results in total overhead spending of 30%.
