A Charity Intelligence 2025 Top 100 Rated Charity.

Founded in 1964 as Compassion of Canada, Ltd., Compassion Canada (COMP) works to release children from poverty in Jesus' name. The charity delivers "holistic child and youth development programs" (ie, addressing each child's physical, cognitive, socio-emotional, and spiritual needs) through partnerships with over 8,900 local churches across 29 countries.

Close to 900 million children worldwide live in poverty, including 412 million in extreme poverty. Approximately 5 million children under five die each year from poverty-related causes, and one in five are chronically malnourished. 250 million children are not in school, and 2.2 billion people lack access to safe water.

Compassion Canada runs three main programs: Child and Youth Development, Complementary Interventions, and Survival. The charity spent $62.5m on its programs in the fiscal year ending June 2025 (F2025).

In F2025, Compassion Canada spent $53.3m (85% of total program expenditures) on its Child and Youth Development program. Working through local church partners, the program pairs children in low-income communities with Canadian sponsors. Sponsors fund education, healthcare, food, religious teaching, and personal guidance. Globally, 2,381,687 children were enrolled in F2025. Of these, 97,268 (4%) were sponsored by Canadians (53% girls and 47% boys). Canadian sponsors wrote 100,161 letters to their sponsored children.

In F2025, Compassion Canada spent $6.7m (12% of total program expenditures) on Complementary Interventions, which consists of five subprograms: Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WaSH); Health; Education; Stability; and Disaster Response.

  • WaSH protects children from waterborne disease by providing access to clean water, proper sanitation facilities, and hygiene education; 227,533 children participated globally.
  • Health initiatives provide nutrition, screenings, disease prevention, and responsive care to children and their families; 117,967 children participated globally.
  • Education provides learning resources such as computers and textbooks, as well as tuition support for vocational training and post-secondary education; 2,006,855 children participated globally.
  • Stability provides emergency food, housing support, and caregiver training to families in need; 143,555 children participated globally.
  • Disaster Response assists children and communities with relief and recovery following crises; 606,469 children participated globally.

Compassion Canada spent $1.9m (3% of total program expenditures) on its Survival program in F2025. The program supports mothers and newborns during pregnancy and the first year of life. It provides prenatal healthcare, regular check-ups, critical medical care, nutritious food, and newborn essentials. In F2025, COMP’s Survival program supported 37,834 participants across 137 Canadian-funded programs.
