Founded in 1974 and operating in Calgary, Fear Is Not Love Society (FINL) aims to eliminate domestic and partner violence by helping victims of abuse. The charity runs a women’s shelter, counselling services, systems navigation support, group therapy, and legal referrals to those in need. According to the charity, an estimated 44% of women have experienced abuse in an intimate relationship.

FINL runs six main programs: Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter, Community Services, Men’s Counselling, Child, Youth & Family Therapy, Online Services, and Healthy Relationships. In the fiscal year ended March 2026 (F2026), FINL spent $9.8m on its programs.

Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter represented 47% of FINL’s program spending in F2026 and provides shelter for women and children experiencing abuse. In F2026, FINL reported that 441 people (202 women and 239 children) stayed at the shelter for an average of 24 days. FINL also answered 15,072 calls through its Domestic Violence and Abuse Helpline, with calls averaging 9.5 minutes.

Community Services represented 17% of program spending, providing emotional support, advocacy, referrals, resources, and system navigation to people experiencing or recovering from domestic violence. In F2026, it supported 778 people.

Men’s Counselling represented 11% of program spending and helps men recognize and address abusive behaviour patterns through counselling. In F2026, 360 people accessed counselling services.

Child, Youth, & Family Therapy represented 8% of program spending and provides group family counselling focused on communication and relationship-building skills. In F2026, the program supported 92 people (54 adults and 38 children).

Online Services represented 6% of program spending and provides online toolkits, safety-planning resources, training, and other resources to help people recognize, prevent, and respond to domestic violence and abuse. In F2026, its Men’s Resource Line, which provides phone-based support, information, and referrals for men, received 419 calls.

Healthy Relationships represented 5% of program spending and helps youth build healthier relationships and address harmful or abusive behaviours through counselling. In F2026, the program served 251 people through counselling and delivered 8 presentations to 144 attendees.

The remaining 6% of program spending went to Court Programs, which served 360 people, and Indigenous Initiatives, which held 8 cultural healing events.

Fear Is Not Love Society follows line-item costing. This means it does not clearly report its program, administrative, and fundraising expenses on its audited financial statements, which is not a best practice.

In F2026, FINL received $7.1m in donations and special events, representing 57% of total revenue. It also received $4.7m in government funding (37% of revenue) and $676k in investment income.

The charity spent $9.8m on its programs in F2026, which was 78% of its revenue. It ran a surplus of $630k.

Fundraising costs were $527k, which was 7% of donations, and administrative costs were $1.5m, which was 13% of revenue (excluding investment income). Total overhead was 20%, meaning that for every dollar donated, 80 cents are available to go to the cause. This is within Ci’s reasonable range.
