Founded in 2005 as an informal collaboration among CARE Canada, Oxfam Canada, Oxfam-Québec and Save the Children, the Humanitarian Coalition was formally incorporated in 2009. It is a disaster relief charity that brings together 12 member charities and their local partners to deliver food assistance, shelter and household items, cash assistance, water sanitation and hygiene, education in emergencies, health, and nutrition programs. The charity reports it has a combined presence in 160 countries, responding to both large-scale disasters and smaller, under-reported crises through its Canadian Humanitarian Assistance Fund (CHAF). Member charities pool resources and run joint appeals rather than fundraising independently, aiming to reduce duplicated costs and direct a higher share of donations to relief activities.
The charity reports that globally, 239 million people urgently need humanitarian assistance and protection. At the same time, international aid fell by 20% in 2025 compared to 2024.
Humanitarian Coalition runs two programs: Smaller Disasters and Major Emergencies. In the fiscal year ending December 2025, the charity spent $7.2m on its programs and grants.
Smaller Disasters accounted for 76% of program and grant costs in 2025. Delivered through CHAF, this funding supported ten disaster response projects across nine countries, including earthquakes in Afghanistan and Myanmar, monsoon flooding in Pakistan and Vietnam, and the response to Hurricane Melissa in Haiti. Member charities used the funding to provide cash assistance, water sanitation and hygiene support, shelter and household items, health care, and protection services, reaching 209,317 people.
Major Emergencies accounted for 24% of program and grant costs in 2025. This funding supported the charity's continued response to three large-scale crises: Lebanon, where support reached 285,973 people; Gaza and the West Bank, which supported more than 50,000 people; and the hunger crisis in Sudan. Programs delivered emergency food and food vouchers, cash assistance, water and sanitation support, health care and nutrition screening, and psychosocial support to families affected by conflict and displacement.

Results and Impact
Across its Smaller Emergency Program, Humanitarian Coalition spent $5.7m to support 209,317 people, an average of $28 per person. Its largest areas of support by dollars spent were the earthquake response in Myanmar ($2.0m reaching 56,698 people at $29 per person) and the Hurricane Melissa response in Haiti ($781k reaching 28,524 people at $27 per person).
Across its Major Emergency Program, the charity provided $1.2m in support to Sudan and more than $458k to Gaza and the West Bank. In Lebanon, the Humanitarian Coalition reached 285,973 people, 52% of whom were women and girls.

Humanitarian Coalition’s audited financial statements follow line-item costing, meaning program, administrative and fundraising costs are not clearly separated. Ci used the charity’s T3010 filing with the CRA to determine these allocations.
In 2025, Humanitarian Coalition earned $8.5m in total revenue. It received $3.1m in donations (36% of total revenue) and $5.5m in government funding (64% of total revenue).
Administrative costs are 8% of revenues (less investment income). Fundraising costs are 24% of donations. Total overhead is 32%. For every dollar donated to Humanitarian Coalition, 68 cents are available for programs. This is within Ci's reasonable range.
