OVERVIEW

About World Animal Protection:

World Animal Protection is a 4-star rated charity. It has an A- Results Reporting grade which is above average. For every dollar donated, 74 cents are available to go towards the cause. Its reserve funds can cover 1 year and 3 months of annual program costs.

Founded in 1980, World Animal Protection (WAP), formally known as World Society for the Protection of Animals Canada, is part of a global organization that works to protect animals. The charity strives for a world free of animal cruelty and suffering. WAP has offices in over 50 countries, with its Canadian branch located in Toronto. In 2024, World Animal Protection spent $4.1m on its programs. The charity’s programs focus on tackling what it considers the biggest causes of animal suffering today: industrial farming and the commercial wildlife trade.

Industrial Farming: In F2024, the charity reports that over 70 billion farm animals are consumed annually, most subject to industrial, low-welfare systems. WAP states that more than 25,000 supporters urged Rabobank, the second biggest bank in the Netherlands, to stop funding factory farming after WAP exposed its greenwashing. Through the Farm Champion Project in Thailand, over 1,000 slower-growing chicks were placed on 11 high-welfare farms. In Nigeria, the charity reports 20 civil-society groups were mobilized to oppose a government-JBS agreement that would have expanded factory farming.

Wildlife Trade: In F2024, over 350,000 people across nine countries signed a WAP petition asking the travel group TUI to stop profiting from cruel dolphin and whale entertainment. The charity adds that over 172,000 supporters from 26 countries called for an end to commercial captive elephant breeding in Thailand. In its first year, the Wildlife Heritage Areas program secured 11 designated sites with seven more in progress across 13 countries. WAP reports that 191 rescued bears in Pakistan and Romania received sanctuary care, and two severely burned tapirs in Brazil were rehabilitated through the charity’s partners, Onçafari.

Results and Impact

In F2024, World Animal Protection reports that its support for the “EU for Animals” campaign led to the creation of the first EU Commissioner for Animal Welfare. WAP reports that in F2024, travel companies such as Klook and TripAdvisor committed to remove offerings linked to the Taiji dolphin hunt, while 179 travel businesses signed the charity’s wildlife-friendly travel pledge.

WAP states that it helped stop a proposed US $2.6 million captive lion-breeding project in Uganda, and its efforts contributed to South Africa’s halt of captive breeding and commercial exploitation of lions.

In F2024, WAP reports that 48,802 consumers, 1,597 doctors, and three major healthcare companies committed to wildlife-friendly alternatives. WAP adds that it contributed to the Australian government’s decision to phase out live sheep exports by 2028, preventing animals from enduring long and uncomfortable trips.

While Ci highlights these key results, they may not be a complete representation of World Animal Protection’s results and impact. This charity is not yet rated on impact (n/r). This does not affect its star rating.

World Animal Protection is the global voice for animal protection, with more than 50 years’ experience campaigning to end the needless suffering of animals. With an international network of offices, World Animal Protection is respected globally for its knowledge, expertise and pragmatism, influencing the highest levels of government and galvanizing widespread popular support through its local presence.

Having recently embarked on an ambitious new systemic change strategy, World Animal Protection is taking on the global systems that fuel animal exploitation. The organization aims to elevate animal protection to become a priority issue of global importance, changing attitudes and mindsets so that animals are no longer considered as mere commodities.

To create the greatest impact for animals, World Animal Protection will focus its attention over
the next 10 years on two systemic change goals:

  1. Transforming the global food system to be humane, equitable, sustainable, resilient and capable of feeding the world;
  2. Ensuring wildlife has the right to a wild life in their natural habitats, by dismantling the systems that exploit them for profit.

World Animal Protection champions a One Health, One Welfare perspective – acknowledging that the health, and welfare, of humans, animals and the planet are deeply interconnected and that the mistreatment of animals also jeopardizes our own wellbeing. Together with supporters, partners and a breadth of stakeholders, World Animal Protection aims to change the way the world works, to end animal cruelty and suffering. Forever.
